quit picking up stray 914s and keep them both :p

Joe Bob 01-08-2007 08:00 PM

I have the stock polished Fuchs....they just have hard as rock A008R Yokohamas from 1994.

The 964 wheels have good rubber and I had them laying around....

Its SoCal. How are you going to live without a Cab???

Unless you backdate the Turbo I like the looks and driveability of the Cab. The turbo is a nice bad boy but you will get in trouble with it and it eats $$$ faster than a 22 year old Blonde from Newport Beach.

Just my 2c worth...

RideShoot&Drink 01-09-2007 02:06 AM

Headers and muffler was pretty much the only mod that I've done on my Turbo, could not believe the difference that they made compare to stock and same mod on na car, go for it!

GeorgeK 01-09-2007 03:26 AM

The turbo is the most rewarding of the two to drive fast, once you get the knack for its gearbox. Use period correct parts on it, and its value will increase.
This coming from the (soon ex-) owner of a really mean lightweight car...

oldE 01-09-2007 04:10 AM

Get that backdated cab out of your sight. Send it someplace far away, like , um eastern Canada. Store it with fellow Pelicans , (Jake & I will exercise it every now and again for you ;) ) and drive it when you come to the Maritimes for vacation. Do it now. One of us will make room in our garages for it, so you don't have to look at it until next summer.

Tough decision!

Turbo, hands down.

charleskieffner 01-09-2007 04:51 AM

it does not appear you live above a mile high elevation, so right there i would can the turbo. TURBOS ARE MEANT FOR PLANES SILLY!

the maint. on the turbo during the summers will drive you nuts. adding decent air will cost big bucks. i lived in smell-a and it does get hot, and yes the surrounding dez does also for just about any escape except hwy 1.

plus the fact your gonna get approached at every stop light by wet behind the ear punks wanting to race you. then you will get your ass waxed until boast comes on and by then they are long gone and you are all dressed up and spooling w/no where to go!

i would take the hard hitting 3.6 and the top down any day! plain and simple TURBOS HATE HEAT! your overall longevity will suffer vs. 3.6 overall longevity. the 3.6 should last a lifetime changing oil and giving it some TLC.

true story.........there is an individual here that owns a cherry super unreal low mileage 87 turbo. he never drives it(1st problem), never drives it during summer(next problem)due to being cheap and not wanting to upgrade to patrick moto's 32-37 degree ice cube blowing a/c system.

so what the hell is the car worth sitting in the garage............not a damn thing! """ oooooo i own a porsche and it just sits in my garage!" how cool is that?

are you going to get 250K trouble free miles out of the turbo? i doubt it. but then what do i know? i only worked for porsche when the first turbos were being delivered into arizona and watched all the headaches ensue due to our severe climate.

if your planning on moving to mile high and above elevation..........keep the turbo!

ischmitz 01-09-2007 11:02 AM

Well, I drove both and here is what I think:

The cab: It's a boatload of fun to drive, has superb torque in the lower end and has power all the way up to redline. It's suspension is pretty much perfect and so are the breaks. All around not much else you need. On the flipside it is far away from original but I like the backdated look. If you are after all original this is not the car for you. But if you want a streetracer with next to perfect driveability this is it. And the fact that it is a cab adds to the fun here in fuggly SoCal

The Turbo: I didn't know too much about Turbo's so driving one of this vintage was sort of an eye-opener and I was really looking forward to it. My first impression was that it was sort of eh.... underpowered and lifeless. Maybe because I am jaded because I have driven my 3.6 Targa for too long. I expected more to put it simple. It is pretty much a stock config and thus has no real power below 3k. That is when the Turbo kicks in. The gears of the stock 4-speed are very long so I had to shift between 1st and 2nd a lot to keep it in its power band in the twisties. When the boost kicks in you can feel it - when you lift off the blow-off sounds nice but it unloads the rear wheels and you have to pay attention to this.

So to make the Turo a fun ride I guess one would have to put a lot of efforts into upping the turbo, the exhaust, and the boost control. On top of that the suspension seemed to be soft compared to the cab despite Bilstein's all around. And if you are after an all-stock car this one still would need a lot of work and attention to get the interior up to par.

My vote goes for the cab hands down even though I wouln'd mind playing with the Turbo a little bit....

turbos are cool on I-10 , I-17 , I-40 and other long straights. but here in the great state of arizona, if you are caught above 85mph. its up to the cop(and i would be doing serious ass kissing) to throw your ass in jail. anything above 100mph...........yo ass is in the slammer and that will be reckless driving (8pts.) and yo lic. is gone!

neither track firebird INTL nor PIR have straights long enough for boost to come on. soooooooooo needless to say TURBOS get smoked all day long by lighter naturally aspirated cars.

"i got a turbo" dont mean jack at that track nor on a 118 degree day when it overheats and the stock oem a/c dont work!

now a turbo on an isolated stretch of highway w/patrick motos a/c upgrades or btwn say vegas and reno.............man i'll be there w/a valentine and an escort detector.

As much as I'd love to have a 930, I think a well sorted 3.6 transpalnt would be more drivable and be just as fun to drive. The low end grunt of the 3.6 is awesome, if only my 964 weighed 1000 pounds less...

9dreizig 01-11-2007 11:08 PM

turbooooooooooooooooooooo

Scott at Pelican Parts 01-11-2007 11:42 PM

Simplify the exhaust system on the turbo. Anybody who has heard the 934-esque straight pipe in Barrett's yellow car can't get that evil wonderful sound out of their head.

Wow, what a dilemna. Please PM me if you are going to sell one or the other because BOTH of those cars look like incredible fun. And if you've put a lot of work into them you should enjoy them both for a while... but as I said please PM me if you are going to sell one or the other ... ;)

Joe Bob 01-12-2007 04:34 AM

turbo versus cab thread....

you have a pm....

Dan in Pasadena 01-12-2007 05:33 AM

I'll probably get flamed here but...

Get wide polished Fuchs for the Turbo and keep it. I HATE all black wheels on cars. Had them on my 951 - everyone loved them, I hated them.

javadog 01-12-2007 06:01 AM

No flames.

Keep the turbo.
Change the wheels to stock finish Fuchs, 951 8x16's and regular 9x16's.
Add trim strips to the back bumper.
Install Euro bumperettes and lose the side maker lights, if you want.
Fix all the little picky stuff we can't see in the photos.
Avoid the temptaion to go too far on engine mods.
Lose the A/C and roll the windows down if you get hot.
Accept that it drives different than a 911 and learn to give it what it wants.
Enjoy having a little cash in the bank, from the sale of the cab.

TURBOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!with a few changes ..........

Joe Bob 01-12-2007 07:29 AM

As mentioned....I STILL have the Fuchs. They have 14 year old Yokohama Race tires on them....hard as rocks...it would be like cornering on ice.

DByers 01-12-2007 07:34 AM

Keep them both. Just pimp Ingo down on Hailey St. during weekends to make some extra cash. ;)
