Steve, I think you're right. For our purposes, a Cab or Targa should be fine. My cab has has some suspension work done already including a Rennline strut brace, Bilstein Sports, 22/28 t-bars, lowered, aligned, corner balanced, etc. No monoballs or solid bushings, however.
Since I've already got the car, and it doesn't get driven much anymore, why not use it as a DE car? Otherwise it just sits around looking pretty. I'll pick up a roll bar within the next month. I'll try to find some good used race-type buckets, and five point harness' to go with them. I'll also probably pick up some R-compound tires too. This will be a piecemeal operation but I've got nothing but time. One item at a time. Oh yea, I have to replace my clutch and fix a couple of pesky leaks too. |
hit dave b at tre hollywood, up for roll bar. may save alot of freight

Some things to ponder about being new to DE's
I've only done 6, so it's very fresh in my mind. Hoosiers, as with other r compound tires, are an addictive drug. There should probably be a prescription involved. Getting into the "solo" group is also a buzz for an adrenaline junkie. Watch video's of the track you will be DE'ing on. Google video, You Tube, ask for video's on pelican. Watch them over and over and over... Get a friend to do the DE's with you. PCA, NASA, BMW club, Audi club tec. all do DE's Getting through the fist couple DE groups is both informative and irritating. Lots of good advice and lots of differing opinions. Don't give up when you (or, inadvertently, an instructor) convince yourself that you SUCK. Make no mistake, you do suck, but it wouldn't be any fun at all if it were easy. Move through the groups at your pace, but don't wait 2 or 3 years to solo, as some would advise. Once you solo, you can almost always ask an instructor you like to ride along. You can find cool pictures of yourself on the web after DE's http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1168639351.jpg Thanks for listening - DE's have turned out to be the most fun I've had in a long time - and I really didn't think it would be that way at first. Thanks Bob -
Probably shold have started a seperate thread entitled "How to keep going to DE's when I suck" any additions?? How about - "Talk your wife into going and liking it" |
Well, as has been said in my original post, I've done two track days at Willow Springs raceway - both on the big track. I did both with the 996 (it's a 2000 Carrera 2, the last year without stability management or any other driver aids) and had a blast. Yes it is addictive. However, since the 996 is the daily driver and I make payments on it, I don't want to risk an expensive repair (or worse), hence the thread about whether or not I should track the Cab.
Yes, I do suck, but I'm getting better. I too have had those little four bangers pester me. I was lucky enough however to have Jack Olsen drive my car for about seven laps or so while I sat in the passenger seat, watched, listened, and learned. Wow! After I saw what the car was easily capable of in good hands, and had a good idea of the proper line, I was able to make drastic improvements and gain a lot of confidence. We'll see how it goes with the older Carrera. I'll definitely need Jack to come along with me again. :) |
