What kind of Porsche owner are you??

I realize that trying to classify a group as diverse as the Pelican community is nearly impossible, and you may not fit in any of these 3 groups perfectly. But I think this is a fun exercise to analyze the demographic of us Pelicanites.

Paint and Polish guys have immaculate Porsches. They have exquisitely clean cars which shine in the sun like jewels. The paint is so deep you feel you may fall in if you dare to get too close. The observer immediatly makes sure that they do not have keys or other objects in thier hands as they approach. These cars generally are very low mileage examples with perfectly manicured wheels, and enough wax to make Madame Tussaud jealous.

Motor and Tranny guys usually have very well kept cars as well, although anything less then 400 horse is just unacceptable. These are the big bore, big turbo, and twin turbo cars which have enough power to snatch a speed bump off a parking lot with a tap of the loud pedal. They too have trick suspensions to keep these monsters from pointing skyward when provoked. Some have special buttons and dials on the dash to accentuate the high which these guys are hopelessly addicted to. They generally have huge rear tires which still suffer from major traction loss. These cars are to be feared by driver and opponent alike.

Suspension and Tire guys have cars that are less pretty in general. They have adequate power but not too much to upset the cars' balance. Many of you are track junkies who spend thier leisure time at racetracks and parking lots around the world. Some of you more rebellious ones are sliding your cars, close to the limit of adhesion, on a local mountain road. "You know who you are!" The underside of these cars are in many cases more clean and impressive then the topside. You are worried mainly about hitting your apexes, throttle steer techniques and keeping uniform tire temps. The Griots Garage catalog is buried far under a stack of Grassroots Motorsports, and Sports Car magazines. You have "Going Faster" and Fred Puhn's book "How to Make Your Car Handle" on your coffee table to the bewilderment of your friends and significant others.

So now is the time for introspection. Who are you...................really?

You also left out guys who are pretty much happy with their car the way it is. No real upgrades other than "necessary" ones.

Suspension is one of the things you can do, while keeping the car looking good.

Flares, stripes, yeller headlights, etc. are too often used for their bling factor...not necessarily performance enhancements, but "look at me" stuff.

A VERY clean car gets me to looking, not added faddish stuff. Suspension mods done well don't show...

Bigger displacement engine swaps? Porsche is a natural for that...like stuffing a 454 big block into a '55 Chevvy that came off the line with a 265 "mouse motor"...

Nickle and dime here as well, I guess. I've got two "driving restorations" which both vie for control of my wallet, and I do my best to keep them running, handling, and stopping well.

Looks run in second place.

As I am not mechanically inclined, I have to claim Paint and Polish. I like my car to look good, but haven't done any mods to it.
Yet.

When I decide to, John Walker will have his hands full...

Keep it clean as possible, Much attention to looks, but not scared to spank the hell out of it. Rock chips are a badge of honor.

Mix of 1 and 3

forgot
gasmoney and reactive maintenance

This driver isn't really into things like long downtime, a maintenance job allready lasts to long, quite often, he has just one daily driver Porsche, and uses it for groceries and highspeed runs at midnight, if a second Porsche is in the inventory, more likely then not, it will be a project that never really get's anywhere, half running, not road legal, and referred to as "the backup in case the first one is down.", at the same time the first one always has some small rattle, squeek or wobble, and the excuse is "always leave something unfixed as to not upset the Porsche Gods"

As I am tracking the car more and more the suspension/tires are the place I have to concentrate. Motor/tranny won't happen until the original engine needs it.

Then I will probably just transplant a 3.6 and refreshed 915 and keep driving it.

The poll needs another selection line: World Dominating 911SC owner

that's not a class, that's a probable indication of being part of a class

fresh oil and delusions of grandure
These owners are into driving their car mostly for fun, they will make sure their Porsche is well groomed and has a good stable to lurk, ready for action
they pick the car for a combination of reliability and driving potential, upgrades only when absolutely necessary... quite often they will join virtual brotherhoods that reinforce their beliefs and their choice of cars...quite often they will be seen driving "Bulletproof SC's" and the related SC World Dominiation Plot...

Nickle / dime, although with the right wife I could sell my house and rebuild the engine, freshen the suspension, replace the wiring harness, RUF bumper covers, wider Fuchs, paint job, ..... Thank God for the wrong wife. Cheers, Mike.
