Driver's Mirror Anyone else have this problem?

If not already mentioned, the wiring harness at the toggle tend to go bad due to corroded connectors or in my case a pulled ground connector after working on the window regulator.

I could hear it click but no movement in one direction, so I pulled the toggle and found the female socket for the ground was moving in and out. So when I mated the toggle it would simply push right out. Bent the tab and it kept the socket in place VOILA, working mirrors left to right. For extra measure I cleaned the contacts as well.

Draco: Just to clarify, you did not have exactly the same symptoms as the person who started this thread, right?

The Bentley manual shows which color wires are to be connected. I just completely disassembled the mirror on my '88 to paint it, and then reassembled it, and all the functions up/down left/right work fine. If the heater button causes the mirror to move, then one of the heater wires is in the wrong position. There are 6 positions on each side of the white plastic connector, so 12 wires that all have to be correctly located. I could send you a picture of that page of Bentley if you're interested.

I've got the Bentley manual somewhere -- but I would appreciate the picture. Thanks. I just had the mirrors painted, and now my symptoms are exactly the same as the author of this thread. Looking at the connectors, they are indexed (or "clocked"), so I have a hard time understanding how the wires can get mixed up in disassembly/reassembly, but I suppose anything is possible.

If not that, then it's a problem with what: The joy stick? Can't be ... just changed it. Maybe the L/R switch? Bad ground? A short? (No fuses are blowing.)

Correct, not the exact same issue, OP's appear to be a crossed wire if the defrost switch is controlling the mirror as well.

Just giving another take to the phantom mirror issue.

The connectors are indexed, but the wires could be put into the connectors incorrectly.

Bob, I would bet money that the wires got reinserted incorrectly when the mirrors were put back on. Keep in mind that in order to remove the mirrors entirely, its not enough to just disconnect the two halves of the white plastic connector, they actually have to detach the 6 wires from the door side half of the connector.

Here is my photo, which contains my jottings on the proper sequence, since the table in the manual was of little help.

Thanks very much for this my friend ... the sketch helps. Now I *assume* the color of the wires in the buried inner door connection match-up on both sides of the connector?

Alas, no, they do not. Which is why the table is not very helpful. The connector is inside the mirror, and you will have to disassemble the mirror to get at the white connector. You also need a special wire removal tool to remove the wires from the white connector. My suspicion is that they only disconnected the wires on "door-side" of the white connector, since that is required to fully remove the mirror from the door. I just did this last week. If you search on threads started by me, you will see the thread.

Just saw this question on the site, I had a similar problem that was solved when I replaced the mirror "motor" . P/O had made a sport mirror switch and was wired incorrectly. Hope this helps.

Well, the problem is solved on the mirrors: Last evening a buddy and I compared the factory's mirror wiring diagrams against what was on the car. Not one single connection was correct, which explained the crazy behavior. So I popped the pins out of the barrel connector (on the door side of the loom), put them back where the chart said they belonged . . . and presto, everything worked perfectly. Why the person at the shop who took the mirrors apart didn't take notes, or even take a few cell phone pix, I have no idea.

Was also hoping for some feedback on solutions - My driver side works fine. The passenger side has 3 directions of movement. Out of curiosity from this thread, I pushed the defroster button and walla ! the passenger mirror moves in the 4th direction.

Why ? Any thoughts ? Can a flaky ground actually cause such odd behavior ?

I had an issue with my 86 911 passenger side mirror that would not move in one of the four directions. No ring to turn to remove the glass. Just three prongs which can be easily pried out. The two wires for the heater are attached to the glass module. Then removed the three bolts and separated the barrel connector and used wd-40 to clean the pins on both sides. Tested voltages and seemed OK. Plugged the barrel together and tested and they all worked. Part number on the black mirror housing which contained the motor is 911.731.041.01 BBP. Pelican sells the glass that fits this unit, though I did not need it, though it is a great photo 911-731-035-08-M100.

i get panning only, no tilt...not matter with direction i toggle the controller
