Need help w/Sway-a-way spring plates install.

I've been staring at this design for 30 mins. now and I still have not figured it out. Instruction don't help much. Does the long end go in the torsion bar tube or out? The pics obviously are without the bushings. Either way, there are only sprlines at the extreme end of the long tube which, in either orientation, is not where the splines will be on my torsion bar. Can someone please help?

Car is a 78SC. Thanks you.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1170358988.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1170359002.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1170359030.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1170359043.jpg

I'm not much help other than I think the height adjuster should be on the outside of the spring plate which puts the long tube on the outside.
Do they make a G50 version of these spring plates? The outside torsion tube on the G50 is longer than the one on the 915. However, even the one on my G50 doesn't go past the opening in the rear fender.

Here is a side by side comparison of where the splines are compared to the old set-up. This just doesn't make any sense.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1170360120.jpg

I think it must be a G50 spring plate. Here's a past post with a picture of a similar after market spring plate for a 915.

I think someone sent you the wrong plates ... those are probably for an offroad, tube-frame buggy application. The Sway-A-Way plates for any given year of 911 are supposed to be for stock-length torsion bars ... and those are clearly NOT!

Greeeeeeaaaat! My car's been on jackstands for over a week waiting for these. When I ordered them the website said "in stock-ships within 48hrs", then all of a sudden they were on backorder.

Not too happy with Pelican right now.

Don, Did you stick with this set-up? Any problems.

And after you solve that problem, you'll be faced with this one....

The factory spring plates are looking pretty good right now, eh? ;)

It looks like they have addressed the rubbing portion by including a spacer but that would mean even less spline engagement than is shown in Don 911s post above.

Those are the wrong spring plates for a '78. I have Sway-A-Way springs plates on my '76 and they look nothing like that. I don't even think those are G50 spring plates! Yikes, what could they have sold you?

Also, I have not seen any sort of warping of the spring plates like what is shown in the thread above. I don't think that problem exists with the Sway-A-Way product. Mine have worked flawlessly for 13 years now.

Interesting. Mine have been fine even after 13 years of use and thousands of track miles. Thanks for the info - I didn't know about that with the Sway-A-Ways.

I have a previous installation post on this.
I think the problems you'll find is that:
1. The outer stub is too long (your pic is a funny exaggeration;)), so that it only grips about 1/2 inch or so of the t-bar spine. This isn't enough. Some have shortened it by cutting out a section and welding it back together.
2. The front edge has to be ground-off a little bit because it will hit the mounting posts and possibly break them.
3. The two halfs of the arm may spread apart because they are not fastened/bolted together. There was a similar post regarding the similar Wevo design in the archives.

Sway-A-Way should know of this by now, and should have adjusted their products to work properly.........as any responsible company would.

I just called Pelican and asked for a refund. Going back to good old Neatrix and stock spring plates. Very dissappointed, I had visions of never having to reindex my bars again.

You may want to consider the ER polybronze bushings instead of Neatrix.

Ulrich,
The link that I posted was just one I found on pelican. I recently replaced my spring plate bushings with the elephant racing set up but using stock spring plates.

Could you have exchanged them for the correct part? If they don't have, there are other vendors. Much easier than wrestling with the factory spring plates.

After seeing some of the other problems posted above associated with these plates it really put me off the whole idea.

don't get turned off from it... i have sway-a-ways on my car and they're nice. re-indexing is somewhat easier for sure.... just get the right part and you should be fine...

Well Wayne with Pelican e-mailed me that this is the right part just a new design with longer tubes. Again, if you look at my pic with the red marks where the splines are, my torsion bars would have to be much longer to engage the splines in the longer tube. Besides, the longer tube almost sticks out of the side of the car (see pic), and that's without the bushings installed.
