It's a poor time to sell either car at the moment (especially the clone I think)- if you can wait 2-3 years (a long time I know) you'll get a better price for either.

Assuming you don't want to wait, the clone is both replaceable and closer to the driving experience you already have in the race car. Thus while I think it will cost you more to keep the cup, that's what I'd do. If you take a different car out for a DE I think it's because you want a change, yes?

I still have both cars and don't intend to sell either on them as this moment.

As far as an investment, the cup is not a very good one. Yeah, sure, it will go up in value, but no where near as much as real estate or even a good stock portfolio. Contrary to what many are thinking, now is a great time to buy stocks. Everything is on SALE!

Even an RS is only worth about 10 times as much as it was thirty years ago. Does anyone think this cup will be worth that much more in the same time frame? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, your investment guy could likely line you up with some more lucrative investments if that is what you wish.

Anyway, I don't think this is about an investment for you. Does the cup have any particular sentimental value to you? Does the RSR? I am assuming that you built the RSR. Do you feel any sense of attachment to this car?

For me, visually, the RSR is much more stimulating. It has all the curves and likely the sound and pure sex appeal as well. The cup is a 964 with a blingy tail and painted wheels. But, there are only 45 of them, and exclusivity has an appeal all of its own.

Tough choice. My opinion is stick with the one you enjoy the most. If you get wood driving it, then that's the one.

If it was a choice I had to make for myself without any other information, I would keep the cup and the RSR and sell the IROC. But its only an opinion...

I just tripped across this old thread- it was fun to re-read replies. As an update - I did sell RSR clone a couple of years ago. I still have 964 cup. I have been running 944's at the track with my kids, they are pretty much grown up now. Been through a lot of fun cars over the years but you really can't beat an early 911 hot rod, I may have to build or buy another.

Good thing you kept the cup, given value. Wish I held onto mine longer, I had USA Carrera cup#4, which I sold before the surge. I also had a euro 993 cup, also sold too soon.....

Phil, what flares were used on your old rsr? They look to be turbo flares (early) with a more rounded profile in the rear. They looked fantastic.

OK - I need to ask - if you still had the 1970 S, and brought it back to stock, how would that have worked out? I realize a restored car is not the same as an all original, but the early S's have also been on a bit of a tear, price wise. Anyway, congrats on a couple of great purchases.

I screwed up that first post - RSR was built on a E chassis, the RSR race car was built on a 73 S chassis but it would taken a major investment to bring it back to stock. I think flares were turbo flares but flares were installed when I bought car so I don't know for sure. It's funny to watch used race cars go being inexpensive non-competitive cars to valuable cars- I would have never anticipated 964 RS and 964 cup prices to rise so far so fast.

One of my brain's unfortunate shortcomings is name recognition. Rereading this thread when it was recently bumped jogged my memory of sitting with you in the bleachers at Miller this past summer talking about your 964 CUP. I finally pieced it together with your Pelican persona! There probably aren't too many other 964 CUP cars in Montana!

I am hopeful that the latest news about the recent sale of Miller being vacated doesn't affect next summer's schedule... I guess time will tell.

Not going to happen- she has been very supportive of the car thing, especially now that my kids can some with me to track and drive. :D She bought the blue targa - doesn't get any better than that.
