Is a break-in period needed after having heads redone?
My heads were removed due to bent exhaust valves. Pistons and cylinders were not removed. The only new parts are the six exhaust valves and one guide. Do I need to observe any sort of break-in period?

drive it normally and readjust the valves after 1000-1500 miles. then you're good for the regular 15K interval service/valve adjust.

Thanks John. I was hoping I didn't have to baby it for 1000 miles. I would have to skip DEs and autocrosses for the next six months at the rate I put on miles.

if you hear any obnoxious ticking before 1500 miles, do it early. generally, the only reason to baby it for 1000 miles is to break in new pistons and cylinders, so the rings seat nicely. even then you shouldn't baby it granny style by any means.

Wait a minute, valve adjustments are at 15,000 miles? I thought I had to take my early car in for one every 6,000. Glad I can extend that one out more than I though.

I know but I had no idea it was 15,000. I have about 6,000 on this adjustment and I am glad I can keep going.

nothing wrong with doing the valves earlier than 15K. i do on mine. but that's the factory recommended period. hotrods that get driven hard will need them more often, as well as old tired engines. if it's got a louder than normal valve tick, it should be corrected regardless of mileage.

Interesting John. I always learn here
![]() I always thought it depended on what engine. SCs/3.0L = 10k interval 3.2L = 15k intervals -Chris
