I found out that the bolts for the decklid to the car are unique, ordered them from europe, hope others don't learn this the hard way like I did

You mean like, metric?

I'm using very normal M6 x ? allen head or hex head bolts and flat washers. What's so special here other than period-correct genuine factory M6 fasteners?

Thanks,
Sherwood

I'm puzzled too. I have spend time fussing around with washers as shims, and sliding things around trying to get the new decklid to be in just the right position (or the best compromise, the plastic repros being notorious for being a bit off). But never worrying about what sort of wierd bolt was involved.

The only oddball (to me) bolt sometimes encountered in metric cars is the 7mm, but if Sherwood says that's not involved here I believe him. 6mm is what I recall. I used to switch the stock lid for a plastic ducktail every summer for track season, and back to stock for the winter because my ski rack fit on that tail. Then I moved to an IROC tail. If something were that special here in the bolt department, I am pretty confident I'd have bumbled across it.

Sounds like the problem is in the ducktail. Whose is it? M6's come in at least 2 pitches. M8 come in 3 that I know of, one of which is not common at all.

OK, James, is this a game?

Where did you get the info from about these unique bolts?

And, what exactly is unique about them?

fellas,

I don't have the part numbers handy here at home (they are at the office) but remind me and I will post them. Warren, no joke, these are legit. They are the bolts that attach the the decklid with hardware and hinge to the car and they have a shank on them to allow smooth operation of the decklid during open/close.

Ahhhh. would those be the pivot bolts for the R engine lid? If so, the engine lid flips open almost 180º as shown and lays on the rear window. Am I getting warm?

I'm gonna hazard a wild guess and say that some of us are talking about the bolts that go through the hinge and into the recessed female nuts inside the fiberglass of the ducktail, while James is talking about the bolts that go through the hinge where it attaches to the chassis -- where it pivots when the decklid opens or closes, functioning as a kind of hinge pin.

Jack, you got it exactly. I am going to see when I pick up the car if I can get a pick of them. They were NOT cheap. I had to get them from 'the fatherland' and they ran me just shy of 100 bucks from our buddy the dealer. Pelican didn't have them and my local dealer got them in 4 days or so. The good news is that the car will be back with me this Friday and I can post a bunch of pics of a nearly completed project! sorry if I confused anyone.

I needed them NOW because they are painting my new decklid. I could have savd only about 20-30 bucks from other vendors and then would have had a wait to deal with. SO-O whataudo. I had deal with it, not the first time on a Porsche. And today I found some old invoices the wife had not found... WOW I have some coin in this car! LOL

Porsche Crest

Well, Jack, you must be right! I vaguely remember a shoulder bolt of some kind ... must be pretty special to sell for $16.45!

OEM-90151247120 STUD - This is a special-order, non-returnable, part (availability and shipping charges may vary). $16.45

Logical that you would know ... since you have switched more tails on your car than anyone outside the factory!

well, I also got them overnighted and I got extra so if I needed them I'd have them. They also have 'special' bolts that go with them. Basically my shop wouldn't let the car leave without the 'right' bolt with the shoulder as they didn't want to have the paint chip.

here is a quesion - do you guys run the rubber stops on the ducktail?

GT Racing sells them and ErichW on the Early s BBS has made a few dozen. He may have some left. Do not buy any on eBay from Spain. They are junk.

I made 24 pairs, but it was a PITA.

Now, back to the reagular scheduled programming/

"......while James is talking about the bolts that go through the hinge where it attaches to the chassis"

Jack,
If that's the case, it's a shoulder bolt and probably a Porsche-only part. Here's a rear hinge. The pivot hole is on the right. The bolt goes through a bracket on the chassis and the hinge.

Sherwood
(errr. kinda late with my response. Oh well)
