993 Windsheild in an SC
Has anyone glued a 993 windsheild into an SC. My mechanic says it a great upgrade. My car is already modified so looks isn't the question. What about trim inside and out after the install? Do they leak?

Who is your mech? I am thinking about the same thing, replacing my original windshield with something easier to see out of

Does anyone know if this is even possible?
I priced a 993 windsheild from Safelite and it was $1450. I assume it had an aerial and heater. Gilbert said he could install one for $350 including the glass. Does glueing in the windsheild make the car stiffer? What does the inside windsheild trim look like on a 993? |

I have a 993 wind screen installed in my 82SC coupe. It is glued in. On my car, a wider than standard outer external rubber seal was required to cover the gap between the wind screen and the body. The external installation is perfect. The bead of black sealant/adhesive used to seal the channel is slightly visible in a couple of places around the perimeter of the windscreen from the inside looking out, but does not distract my attention. It is cleaner than the stock trim. It is very quiet. It can not leak. I has tint and an antenna. I drilled a hole to pass the antenna plug into the trunk in case I ever want to use the new antenna, I think a powered booster may be required for this to work. Overall I am very happy with this mod. Everyone who notices the difference really likes the change, I was not concerned about exact originality. I had to buy a 993 rear view mirror to fit the pre-installed mirror mount that came on the windshield. I paid 500 plus tax two years ago for the windscreen including installation. I think the mirror was about 90 dollars and came with an Audi stamp, but the mark is not visible once the mirror is installed.

is there any reason the 993 windscreen would not fit a '73 coupe? didn't the glueing actually help in the torsional stiffness of the chassis?

What I'm not clear on, is if that wider flange is needed for a retro-fit / glue surface.

sk6f3 can you tell me two things? Where did you get the wider than stock rubber trim used on the outside and did you install the interior trim from the 993 in the inside?

in other threads i found that the 964 and 993 had 15mm flanges and the earlier 911s had a 10mm flange. i doubt 5mm extra flange would make much difference in chassis rigidity. i'm just not sure the gluing in of the windscreen was for other reasons other than chassis strength. i'm also not sure the 15mm flange was needed for the 993 windscreen to have enough glue surface.

What is the advantage to using a 964 or 993 windshield in a 911?

What is the advantage to using a 964 or 993 windshield in a 911?
I my case I was putting a 964 windshwild in because I have updated my car to the C2 look. The older 911 gasket has center trim piece while the 964 doesn't.
The subject of the 993 piece was just out of the blue. I will most likely put in the 964 one because at some point when I get finished I want to club race in the stock class so I'm sure putting in one from a 993 would lead to protest because it might just stiffen the body and has slightly better aero. I would still like someone to tell me about thewider outside trim and the inside trim on a 993! I guess I can just go look for one. |

I did not install an interior trim piece, I did not even realize one was available, it might be nice. My installer test fit the windshield and realized the outer rubber trim that came with the new shield would not overlap the the edge of the body channel as it should. He ordered a wider piece of trim from his supplier, and it all worked out beautifully.
