993: trouble spots?
Hi,
I've been looking at purchasing a solid 993 for the last couple of months. I was suppose to buy one for a good price, but it was sold from underneath of me. Needless to say, I wasn't pleased when the owner told me it was mine. Anyhow, it got me to thinking. I currently own a 1970 911T, and I'm pretty familiar what the trouble spots are in those early long noses. However, I'm clueless when it comes to finding potential problems, typical headaches, worries, etc. when looking for a good 993. Any pointers? Sincerely, Brent

Check out the 964/993 forum. The short of it, from what little I know, is that for 96-98 993's the CEL light can be a major hassle, and you will fail emissions b/c of it. The small air ports in the exhaust ports get clogged w/ carbon. The 95's do not suffer from this issue. Otherwise, they are quite solid cars.

'95 have a factory recall on the wiring harness that any dealer can do at no charge. 96 goes to OBD II which sometimes has problems with CEL staying on causing inspection fail. It's due to clogged secondary air injection which the 95's have but they are OBD I which won't flag for it. They wear out rear tires quickly unless you use the later alignment specs. I just spent a little time driving one owned by a good friend who races his cars and the performance is incredible...lots of torque. Pretty much the epitomy of NA, air cooled cars IMHO.
