Eyeball correct NUMERIC oil temp sender

Pelicans,

Can someone please tell me which is the correct NUMERIC oil temperature sender?

I got the one on the left with the PP backdate gauge face and sender "kit." I got the one on the right via PP catalog description:



I've got everything apart right now (changing pressure sender also), so I'd really appreciate your help!

The one on the right is the one I ordered...got the gauge at Hershey.

I have the same questions about the sending units. Could one of you fellas please explain and let me know the part # for the correct sending unit.

I too purchased a numeric gage and installed the provided sender......is it not correct?

My original equipment on my 81SC was like the one on the right. When I purchased the numerical gauge and sender from PP it came with the version on the left. I would have much preferred to use the original one (since it is much easier to connect the wiring - the new sender wiring tab aligned at the 6 o'clock position). My understanding is that the two senders are different and you are suppose to use the sender on the left if replacing the entire gauge with the numerical version. My understanding came from reading comments here so I cannot verify that this is indeed a requirement.

Daryl,

Thanks for your input. I also bought the combo gauge and sender package and got the sender on the left. It was clearly different from the one I removed from my '81 (the one on the right). I couldn't get it to work.

Not knowing whether or not I had screwed up the sending unit while screwing around with the connections on the gauge, I reordered the numerical gauge sending unit from Pelican Parts and got the one on the right!

So either:

1. The correct sending unit is the one on the left, and I fried it while messing with the connections,

2. The correct sending unit is the one on the right (I haven't tried it yet), or

3. The correct sending unit is the one on the left, and Pelican sent me the wrong sending unit.

This is what I am trying to figure out; I was hoping someone could just tell me "the one on the left (or right) is definitely the right sending unit since I am successfully running a numeric temp gauge using that particular unit." In which case I would exchange it from Pelican.

...Anyone else?

The first numerical gauge I received from PP was broken / inoperable. This, of course, could not be determined until it was installed... After going through the entire installation process I had to remove everything and reinstall my originals. I sent the broken gauge / sender unit back and the second one I received did work. I think I remember reading here that others have too received bad (new) gauges.

I have the sender on the left installed and it seems to work with my numerical gauge.

Is it dumb luck?

Daryl, now that you have the new one working, which sender was sent from Pelican?

I did check oil temps in the tank with an accurate, digital thermometer and they do correspond relatively well with the new gauge (at least around 200 degrees). I think the thermometer is actually more accurate, but that's expected.
