Not driven every day.

What is your opinion on Porsches that are only driven once or twice per week?
Does this sitting around create problems in the long run?

Hell no. My car is driven every weekend, and loves the attention. No abnormal problems I can see. The relationship remains like dating, we both await out time together and spend it well. Driving 'er every day would be too much like marriage.

No RarlyL8, I have to strongly disagree with you. It's nothing like marriage, I LOVE driving my 911 everyday.

Drive your 911 every day and it will get a lot of stone chips, cold starts and kms on the counter.

Don't drive it and it will develop flat spots on the tires, get rusty brakes, and attract condense water in exhaust, engine and interior.

cant say I've noticed any problem with just weekend driving, though it does stay in a warm garage during the week. Long runs to allow the engine oil to get hot are the most important factor, short runs with cold oil are definatly bad. I also work the brakes quite hard and this helps prevent any seizing. However if the car lived outside during the week especially in a wet climate then I think just weekend driving would not be sufficient to stop things seizing

These things are stunningly beautiful and would make nice sculptures, but this is not why we love then so. We love them because they are cars. Even better, these cars are among the most obedient of cars.

Casually cruising the highways, their engines spin at 50 revs per second and they do this for as long as we wish. Occasional bursts past 100 revs per second.

I get about 5% of my enjoyment of this car by just looking at it. To enjoy the other 95%, I have to spin the wheels.

Not only do I drive it every day, after a year of ownership I still look forward to each lunch hour, as this is drive time. It's not dating, and it's not marriage. It's a passionate love affair.

The question was "will weekly driving hurt the car". The answer depends on how the car is cared for by the owner. Living in the midwest I simply could not drive my car every day and enjoy it. Today the low was minus something and the high was 12F. No fun to be had in a sports car. Right now my car is resting quietly in its heated garage. This has GOT to be better for the car than driving it stone cold on salty roads. If you live in a better climate I tip my hat to you.

This brings up a related question that I have been wrestling with. I also live in Minnesota and cannot drive between November and April. I also have a cabriolet, so it's not much of an issue, no matter how bad the PWS gets. How should I store it? It sits in an unheated but insulated garage and I start it up once every couple of weeks or so and let it run until the oil temp guage moves into the white. There is nothing in the gas except for some fuel injector cleaner/anti-icer (non alcohol). Should I not start it up at all until spring? Or is it better to run it for a half hour or so periodically?

Why don't you P guys just move to LA.
I drive my car everyday. One of the advantages of So Cal, aside from the babes.

Babes galore.
Hondas to smoke every day.
Even driving to get some fast food, some putz in a Rice Burner wants a piece.

Lived in Colorado for 8 years.
Having originally come from So Cal, I walked around in the snow with Vans on and no socks.
It sucked.

Let me say, I ain't never leavin' CA! Even if it topples off into the pacific.

MRM - My location is just far south enough that I can drive the car about 11 months out of the year. When I can't drive it I don't let it sit longer than two weeks between start-ups. The fuel system is probably the most sensitive to sitting unused. If I were in your shoes I would start the car every couple of weeks and let it run a long time. But BEFORE I started it I would get some type of temporary heater in the garage and let the car warm up above freezing. It's just easier on everything than a bone cold start every couple of weeks for a long winter.

This is all just my best guess, I have no experience with air (oil) cooled cars in very cold climates.

As for moving to California, there ain't no way. The midwest may suck, but at least when the weather is nice you can run flat out for miles without seeing another car.

I've owned my car for a couple of years now and it only gets driven on the weekends. So far so good, I’ve yet to come across any problems with this sort of usage. As an aside my mechanic suggested that the batteries were likely to probably not last as long with such periodic usage, but personally a couple of hundred dollars every 2-3 years doesn't bother me.

Regards,

Well, I did neglect to answer the question. Driving a car just once or twice a week is probably just perfect. The car will never die of loneliness or old age. You have nothing to worry about

Well Guys,
Don't want to make you too envious with locations but my job enables me to follow the Sun!.
I spend winters in S Florida and mild summers in Long Island N.Y. and the car gets shipped in comfort to either location.
Plus I only have to glance out of my 'Bridge window' (on the yacht) to see my babe beckoning me to take her to heaven and back!
Drive her whenever you can! You know she wants you!

i know a gentleman, who shall remain nameless because he has the authority of terminating my arse, with a silver '89 911 special anniv edition that remains in the garage 90% of the year. the car has 30K miles on it. all original except for a momo wheel. of course he also has the luxury of choosing between a fine german sedan, a euro suv, crotch rockets, etc. but the horror...a fine auto that stays in the garage 90% of the time in sunny california. and mine, well mine is driven 90% of the time rain or shine. i suppose if i had his car i'd do the same but then again i would have never bought a car that i was concerned about driving. i take that back...i'd love to have his car.
