964 and 944T caliper difference (pic)
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Is there an easy way to distinguish between these calipers visually? If there is, could you please tell me which ones these are? If not, I understand that I need to disassemble and measure the piston sizes. Thank you. ![]() ![]()

Short answer, No
Long answer 944t in their original applications are trailing mount 964 leading mount. All are axial mount, small body 4 piston. The picture appears to show early 304x32mm 930 rotor, the caliper is a small body mounted in the leading position. So best guess is 964 front 36/40 but it could also be a 944t 36/40 w/ bleeds and feeds swapped.

Thank you Bill.
At the moment I have standard 'M' calipers on 20mm rotors at the rear. Just recently I asked about my friends set up with 930 calipers and rotors front, and standard 'M' rears and was advised that is a poor setup with regards to brake bias. I figure I am in somewhat the same boat. Will my bias be acceptable if I swap the rears with 24mm rotors and wide 'M' calipers (Carerra setup) with no proportioning valve? I have the standard 1977 boosted 19mm master cylinder. Thank you for your help. Craig. ![]()

930 front w/ wide M bias is ok, m/c is too small
I would much rather see the correct 930 rears

Early, and I think most, 944T calipers used the od style "embedded" piston seal and the squared off pistons. If you can see those then you know what you have. If they have the later style piston sealing boot then it could be later 944T or 964.

Your help is very much appreciated Bill.
As far as the rears to balance 964 front calipers goes, I will source some Carrera rears as you once politely said yourself...............'Some of the people on this board are .............frugal.'

North Coast Cab,
Thanks for your help mate. I'll check the seals next time they are off. Although not definative, it will be a good guide. Checkered flag headlights. Very cool.

Craig, I think all the calipers are date stamped so that may help identify them. Also, on my SC, I have a complete 930 brake setup and used the stock 19mm MC for a couple of years and the brakes didn't do that well. Switched to the 23mm turbo MC and it was night and day. I'm still running the SC booster.
