Question RSR Body work questions

For those that have done it or can provide some assistance.

1. What is the best approach to attach the rear part of the front fenders to the factory bolt position? the fender ends short... so some sort of fabrication needs to be done to attach them.

I was thinking of some custom made L brackets... but that still requires some FG fabrication to cover the gaps.

Anyone that has done this or has a car with this setup that can also post photos of this area. I would like to see what that looks like once it is finished..

2. How to fix hairline cracks in the gel coat... while fitting the fenders I notice some hairline cracks in the gel coat. This is happening in areas where fiberglass is very thin. I plan to add some more FG cloth under those areas but wondering what the best approach is to fix the hairline cracks? Sand, filler, Sand, and primer??

3. Both fenders are fitted, now working with the bumper. See the photos.

How can I get them to align? Is it OK to put some stress on the fender and move it out until it aligns with the border of the bumper? That means I will need to put a bolt in there to keep it in place... Show I be looking at cutting the bumper to make it narrower??

Thank you!

i had a lot of problems with the fenders meeting with the width of the bumper also. i had the bumper from one manufacturer and the fenders from another. i ended up buying a new bumper form the same manufacturer. the bumper was still too wide so i shimed out the fenders and pulled the bumper ends in and bolted the two together. for your rear vent area connection i would extend the fiberglass into a flange to connect to the inner fender. i can't understand why the manufacturers of this fg stuff don't make the parts with extended flanges that are meant to be cut to fit. that would be so much easier than extendiong parts with extra fg. one of my normal 73 rsr fenders needed to be extended 1/2" to meet the door.

Thank you. I will your suggestion of shimming the fenders and see if that does not then make it to wide of a gap between the fender line and the hood. First I will center the bumper, use the brackets supplied to hold it firm in place and see if I can move out the fenders to line up. Will post photos later tonight.

No other option on the other issue... I will have to build that extension with FG... In my case I need to extended 2" from that border... oh well... the joys of diy

After playing some more with the position of the brackets and adding some flat washers to shift the fender 1/2" to the passenger side... voila!

C clamps replaced with 1/4" stainless steel bolts and washers:

Made the brackets for the back of the fender... will glass over it an create an extension to the fender in that area to fill the gap that is there.

I used some 1" weatherstripping I found at the local hardware store. Works great, and looks like it's factory.

This is the way my RSR front fenders are mounted from the innerside.

Where did you source your fiberglass parts from?
Thanks,
Tom

Wow! That is how it should be... The fitment on those is outstanding. Are those fenders locally sourced?

Long way from mine looking like that. But this is precisely the photo details I needed. Thank you!!

I had downloaded all the photos of your car from this site:

http://www.pbase.com/slidevalve911rsr/911rsr_project_cars

Any additional photos showing these type of details are welcome, thank you again.

Where these extensions bonded to the original metal fender?? Going over the photos and it makes me wonder if the fit is so good because you used the original metal fender and bonded fiberglasss extensions to it.

Found this in the website... no wonder you have that level of fitment, wow!

"About my 1974 RSR project, I used a set of factory fenders which I purchased about 20 years ago from Germany. Great parts and awesome fitting because they used some extra layers inside the fender flare area to avoid damage to the inside when using the wider racing tyres.

No, its a complete 4 layer fiberglass fender, no metal in it, it was build in one piece i think.
But they are still very light.
Extra layers where made on the innerside top of the fenders for the rubber that will come of the racing tires and could damaged the fenders when they are to thin.
I bought this set of fenders for more then 25 years ago, EVEX in Germany made these excellent replica with perfect fit.

Best,

Wim

p.s.

I could send you some detailed high res pics if you want, just send your e mail adress.

In the old days, Ekkehard Zimmerman made a lot of excellent quality fiber parts, his company is DP motorsport in Germany
Maybe he has some old stock RSR sets.
Not cheap, but quality have to be payed!
try this link;

It seems to be a pervasive point.... American fiberglass will never match up.....we ( Americans ) all seem to "build-to-price"...and hope for the best quality...whereas it seems the Europeans "build-to-quality" and with that set....look for the best price.

The naunce in approach is not lost on many of us......
