Help Needed - Timing Marks

After finally getting my valve covers off to do my first valve adjust, I rotated the engine to where Z1 was on top to line up with the mark on the fan shroud when, much to my chagrin, I find that the fan shroud mark is at about 4 o'clock, rather than at 6 o'clock where it should be.

Evidently, for some reason, the PO has rotated the shroud (the coil never did sit where it should have been) about 60 degrees counter clockwise.

I would assume I can remove the fan and shroud following the instructions for alternator replacement in the 101 book, but is there some way to know I have reinstalled the shroud accurately to where the timing mark should be?

The fun never ends...................

Mark,

There is a locating pin on the engine at the base of the fan. The coil should mount at about 10:00 position with the timing marks straight down. You can loosen the fan by unscrewing the one 6 mm hex head metal clamp bolt. Then rotate the fan to where it should be. It's possible that the PO has the air shroud on the back of the fan in the wrong position and couldn't get the fan to sit in there correctly. That too can be fixed easily. Let us know if you need any pictures to help out.

Any chance you have a picture of the 2 hex head clamp bolts you refer to? Are they behind the fan on the driver's side?

If so, no picture necessary, as I see those.

Mark,

Sorry - it was only one 6 mm hex head bolt. It should be on the passenger side. (I just got back from England, and am still confused about the passenger and drivers side).

Dave,

The timing marks on the crank pulley is relative to the split in the
crankcase. The fan housing locating pin (red arrow below) is
offset to the right and the locating slot in the fan housing is
similarly offset. The timing mark on the fan housing should
match the split in the case.

I am surprised that the fan housing will fit even with the pin
removed. The fan shroud “detent” for the ignition transformer
and the corresponding “bump” on the fan housing should
prevent that.

How about some images of the current condition?

If this was an issue for a PO, I’m concerned about the crank
pulley location. Is the locating pin in place? Even if it is in
place from the outside, it can be sheared off at the crank
mating surface.

Here is the pin from both sides:

For perspective, the hole in the middle is 12.1 mm and the
locating pin is 5.0 mm.

Best,
Grady

Thanks all, I now have the fan & cover properly repositioned, everything seems to be lining up correctly now. This was something I was going to do in the future, but the valve adjust made it a necessity for the task at hand. Had also planned to replace the fan belt, so now it is done also.

Even the bracket for holding the coil had been put on upside down, as in the previous incorrect position, the (I think) ground strap wire that connects to it wasn't long enough for it to be in the correct position.

Whew, I'm thinking this car was set up as some kind of test to determine how many user induced problems could be identified and rectified.

I'm about 7 hours into a 4 hour job, and yet to check one valve clearance. Oh well, live and learn, and learn, and learn........

Most sincere thanks to all the help on this board, and to the great folks at Pelican Parts for providing such a useful forum.
