paintscratch.com question

I need to paint my new euro headlight trim rings. Someone had suggested I try Paintscratch.com. My car is 1983 with original Ruby Red paint. Can anyone comment as to how well thye can match and do they try to compensate for the age factor?

They won't compensate for age, they'll just mix the formula per the book. IMO it won't be very close to your 25 year old metallic paint.

If you take your car to your local professional paint supply store (the ones that supply the pro body shops in your area) they'll be able to do a color match using a computer analyzer and/or by eye. My local shops charge around $50 to do that. They'll get it pretty close.

Local paint supply guys may not be able to compensate either. The best match will be done by a body tech who knows how to adjust the formula on the fly through trial and error. This may take a few attempts before acceptable.

Some believe that a computer "scan" of a paint sample will yield a perfect custom match. However, I was told by a Glasurit distributor, that the computer will attempt to match a scanned sample to the closest formula available from that particular paint manufacturer. I've seen some very close matches and some not so close.

Reds are usually the worst colors for fading. My 86 guards red has a hint of orange to it except in areas where sun didn't get to it.
I bought the paintscratch for my car and it did not match.

I've used Painstratch quite a few times with great success. Heck they even did a match for me per sample of unobtainable BBS wheel silver and it matched perfectly.

They also did Vortex blue, Batic blue (VW), light Ivory and black for my P cars perfectly. No affiliation just a satisfied customer.

Not to knock Paintscratch but Tower Paint has better prices and a superior "fan" aeresol spray head. Makes a big difference to me.

You know what, after looking at your ruby sleeper in your gallery, I see what you mean... it is the wheels. It flows, but it has to have the black wheels. Your car really looks good with the black. I just made a deal on some polished petal Fuchs, so I am wondering if it will look as good as it does on yours. Maybe I should try chrome rings first.

Yeah went through this with and Buick T-Type once. FInally shot the whole car.

I am planning on getting the euro headlights and can't decide whether to paint them to match my Hell Blau metallic color using paintscratch.com or Tower Paint or whether simply to go with the chrome rings. Anyone, have a pic of an SC with chrome rings that they can post? I'd like to get a sense of how an SC (which almost entirely lacks any chrome trim) would look with chrome headlight rings. I haven't seen many SCs with that look although I do think the mid-years look great with the chrome trim on the headlights, around the windows and on the side mirrors.

FWIW, I think that the chrome rings can look good to compliment a polished fuch (either the rim, petals, or whole wheel).

I've got a whole new respect for guys that do body work, after a friend coached me through the repair of my 81'. He kept telling me how easy it was, and that I just needed to be shown how. He was wrong! It takes skill, patience, and a really good eye, and two out of the three don't really get it done.

Thanks Ed. I can't really take credit. My friend is a master, and I almost felt useless. I learned quite a bit, mostly what I said above. It's not easy to do well.
