Replacing Voltage Reg, need new Alt?
Does anyone know if I can replace the Voltage regulator on a 84 911 and not worry about changing out the alterntor. My mechanic seemed to think that the alterntor should be changed at the same time. The battery is overcharging and you can smell the fumes. A voltage test confirms that the voltage is too high over 2000rpm. Having just gotten done with a new clutch and tran rebuild, I don't want to add a new Alternator also. Also I believe I read in a previous note that the voltage reg could be adjusted by bending some tabs. Does anyone know about this and how to measure it. The last part is no big deal as I don't mind getting a new regulator and installing it, but I don't want to do an alternator. Also any suggestions for when I do the job, as this will be my first time getting the alternator out.
Thanks to everyone out there. Les |

See if you can locate a alternator repair shop in your area. They can most likely take care of the problem for you at quite a bit less than a new one. I had mine checked and rebuilt for $45.00. It didn't have the alternator built in, but it was a lot cheaper than replacing the whole unit. Check it out. Steve |

Les,
Your alternator has an internal regulator and brush holder in one unit. Replacement regulators are available as repair parts. So, yes, you can do the repair without having to replace the whole alternator, and those later alternators have been problem-prone, with the regulator being the most common problem! One thing though, the regulator is electronic, and not user-adjustable! The type regulator with tabs to be bent was the old, relay-type external regulator, so don't worry about adjustments --- the electronic regulators either work, or they don't! You can tell instantly with a digital Voltmeter whether they are working or not! Anything above 14.5 Volts at 2500-3000 rpm on your engine, and the regulator isn't working correctly! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 01-07-2001).] |
