Removing seat skins - how bad?

I have a seam on my drivers side seat bottom that need to be restitched. I can do it myself, but was wondering how bad these seats might be as far as removal of these. I have reskinned seats in my Miata and Suburban, but just wanted to see if there were any uh-oh's awaiting under the seat.

Also, has anyone added heat pads to there stock older seats? I have again done this on my Miata, but wondered about a good place to tie in the power for the pads on a 911.

Thanks

get some hog ring pliers and let the new skins sit out in the sun to make them more pliable.

OK, so they are attached with the hog rings... Thanks. Hadn't had a seat out yet, and can't get my fat head in there to see.

Sounds like you just want to remove the old bottom seat cover, repair it, and then put it back on again.

Very doable.

It's held on with hog rings and around the peremeter with thin triangular pieces of metal attached to the frame that stick through holes in the seat cover and are bent over to hold it on. The flat center part of the seat has a strip of cloth stiched between it and the bolster that fits into a slit in the foam, the bottom of the cloth has a metal rod about the diameter of a coat hanger that gives you something to anchor the hog ring to the springs on the seat bottom. On older seats this cloth may be a little rotten and tear easily. Just be careful when you take it off. I used a piece of coat hanger with a small hook bent in the end to reach through the seat bottom and catch the metal rod so I could hold it snug against the springs on the seat bottom and attach the hog rings.

The bottom is easier to remove and replace then the top.

good luck with the repair,

Mac

you gotta be kidding me...

I thought removing the seat would be the easy part!

Apparently PO must have moved the seat rearward on the rails, because with the seat all the way forward, I cannot get access with anything on the bolt head (to remove it). Nothing standard anyway... at this point I am thinking I will have to cut off the tip of the 10mm socket and tack it to a piece of flat stock. I cannot see any other way of getting a tool on those rear bolts to remove them. Has anyone else had this problem, or am I alone in my misery here?

I've been changing out the seats on my '83 in the last couple of days. Finally got them out by removing the front bolts first then running the seat forward again. It seemed like I gained a little bit. Once the front bolts were out,the other thing was to shove the front of the seat slightly sideways away from the console which was preventing full forward movement. Was then able to get a 10mm socket on the end of a wobble extension onto the bolt.

I did my high backs. Strong hands and fingers, plus a LOT of patience required. I though my hands would bleed by the time it was done. Tough job.
