? on c/v boot replacement

Hello once again. I know this topic has been discussed many times, and I've read many threads using the search button. But I'm still a bit confused as to replacing the outer c/v boot. After you remove the axle, do you have to take the complete inner c/v joint off the shaft in order to r/r the boot on the outer. My car is an 88. On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, which you rate it? thanks again.

Yes, the cv joint needs to come off at least one end of the axle shaft. I would use this time to inspect and repack the cv joints on that axle. There is only a circlip holding it inplace. Be sure to catch any balls that come out. In fact, if the balls fall out, it may be time to replace the cv joint itself. HTH

I recently did an '85 early which had replaceable CV's at both ends.

If you have Turbo or turbo-look alike then you'll likely have separate inner/outer detachable CV's. If yours is standard Carrera, then outer CV is part of 1/2 shaft and you'll access it by removing inner CV via cerclip removal. Get a good cerclip tool.

Work is maybe 1+ stars, but do you homework.

Thanks for the quick replys. My car is a regular carerra. I kind of figured that was the way to do it. I bought the 3/4 drive and sockets from harbor freight and I'm ready to take on the job. Just wanted to double check. thanks again

On mine I had to drive the cv off with a brass drift and hammer. The cv didn't just slide off after removing the circlip.

On my 88 cabriolet the outer CV joint is friction welded to the stub axle so the whole shaft has to come out. You can then hammer the inner joint off.

Stick a screwdriver in the brake rotor vents to keep the axle from turning when you unscrew the inner joint. Get the weight of the suspension off the lower shock bolt when you unscrew it.

Check out this thread Carrera CV boot Repl. This was done on an 88 Carrera. Take the inboard cv joint apart and clean it out. They are meant to come apart. The outboard does not come apart. I just added grease rather than try to clean as per recommendation from my mechanic. It is not a hard job with the right tools. Loosening the axle nut with the wheel on and car on the ground take a lot of stress off everything. Found that out after the fact. Have fun.
