Engine drop/tech sessions in DFW coming up! Fri or Sat 4/6 or 4/7?

We had a special one day DE @ MSR with Patrick Long as our lead instructor as well as some of the more accomplished racers locally. Cup Cars outnumbered us "civilians" I think. It was an awesome event!

Except:

One lap after setting a personal best time on the 1.7 mile layout, I pulled the tranny into 2nd from 3rd, instead of 4th. I think I toasted valves in all 6 cylinders, but I'll know more when I get into the disassembly. I'm looking at the brightside, and am going to treat this as a learning experience, and a chance to make a good engine even better. I've been contacted by several people showing interest in participating in the engine drop at least, so they can see how one goes.

->->->So, I'm going to shoot for dropping the engine next Friday 4/6 (Good Friday) or Saturday 4/7. A lot of people have Friday off, so I thought I'd float that one out there to see if it works. I've got a scissors lift and an ATV lift, so this should actually be a pretty simple drop, all hydraulically assisted. Let me know if you're interested and we'll see what we can set up.

It's official, I'll be prepping the car on Friday, and probably lower the motor/raise the car on Saturday. Next week, 4/6-7, that is...

Thanks Patrick. There'll be pics for sure. I'll probably have some threads going on the rebuild forum too as I work thru this.

Yes, when I did the clutch a couple of years ago. This will be easier as I now have the scissors lift to raise the car off of the motor.

I did exactly the same thing and bent all the exhaust valves. One of the valves droped into the engine and destroyed (turned to powder) one of the pistons.

A few grand later spent at EBS (Engine Builders Supply Co.) for new J&E pistons and new Nickasil cylinders, some head work and she is better then new. Went with the middle of the road compression (9.5/1) and its a nice improvement over stock.

Good luck,

Chris

Now THAT is what I'm hoping didn't happen......since the motor ran with no smoke or clanging, I've got my fingers crossed BIG TIME.

I've got my previous pricing from EBS that I'd worked up with them for the "ultimate" build, which I've picked and choosed from, assuming my P's & C's are reusable, and I've still got about $4200 to do a decent rebuild with ARP hardware, cam regrind, racing valve springs, extrude honing, throttle body, necessary machining of heads, rods, etc. That's with my labor to assemble.

With 3.4L bore and such, it was almost $10K before. Since I "retired" last year, I gotta watch it, or my wife will put the hammer down.

My dad did the same thing too, bent all six on the hot side. Pistons werent even scratched, though he would have liked it if they were cause it would have given him reason to pull out the 3.4!

That gives me some hope.

I had a 3.6 motor here too that I rebuilt with 12 bent valves. Pistons were fine. You may be okay with a "topend" and rod bolts.

Sorry to hear of your mishap, that is bummer.

Cheers

Ed - while you are in there make it count - I only wanted to do it once -
Spread it out over a long period of time like Jeff and you don't feel the ouch so bad...

JD- You're absolutely correct on that one. The list has a lot of while I'm at it stuff. That's why I'm going to open up the intake a bit and cam it. I'm going into the bottom end too...no time like the present.

I just hate the thought of having to drop serious $ on new P's & C's. I guess it comes down to whether the pistons got any damage, and what the ring grooves are like. Oh, and they'd better be round too.

It's pretty sick when you think of it: I'm looking at $4200 just for parts and machining with my "budget" build. I know there are others that have spent a LOT more than that. But, look at what kind of Chevy or Ford crate MOTOR you can get for the same money. Porsche devotion runs thick in all of us.

That, or we should all be locked in padded cells.

hey, I am on my way out to the garage right now to take the motor off the stand and get it ready to go in the car tomorrow morning. Is 18 months a long time??

Ed, if you need anything, let me know. (tools to borrow or what not)

Cheers

I'm interested in participating on Saturday. I'm looking at a drop myself and it would be nice to see one done before I do it myself.

Sure Buck, it'd be good to see you. I'll get it all prepped Friday. On Saturday, I'll review for everyone all that I did, and then we'll drop it. Short and sweet.

Ed, my tools are pretty well travelled in the Pelican world so if you need something I would be happy to send it!

Jeremy, I know, I deserve it anyway! Not wanting to steal Ed's thread, but just to show I was not kidding, here she is on the jack now with the trans and starter on!

Ed, you should consider joining the 3.4 club. Lots of nice freindly people........ I hope you don't *have to*, but if the pistons are gone (unlikely) we are always welcoming new members!!

I am sending you a PM as I have a non Porsche related question for you!

Cheers
