confused about struts
I've got all the funds together to 're-do' and assemble this 78sc front suspension to my 71e. From one brake to the
other, it was fully complete. I've NEVER ventured into the front suspension of any 911 before, and I'm really confused about a couple of things. These boges on the front with the 'knuckle' attached.....some books say 'struts with boge have no shock inserts', yet other catalogs and websites sell-boges-konis-bilstiens for front 78s. I lifted the top portion of the shock tube which reveals a nut. Will that release the 'guts', so I may put konis in there, or will I have to Buy an entire strut that has the knuckle attached to it? Also, what MM size torsions did the SC have up front..?? THanks a mill......Raining here in Va |

In the process of putting a '80 SC front susp on my 914. (factory Koni)
Boges could use either boge or koni aftermarket inserts, konis were koni only IIRC. Once you extend the strut you will see a special nut that looks like an aluminum disc threaded into the top of the lower tube. This thing spins out to release the guts. Post 89 models had the integral strut/damper IIRC. The stock front torsion bars are 18.8mm dia. Dave |

So all I have to do is undo that gland nut, and the stuff comes out, and I order new inserts?
Is that a positive that My 78 sc boges will take inserts????? Gotta know this one! |

Yes the Boge struts will take inserts. You remove the big nut, pull out the guts and slide in the new insert. They supply new nuts with the inserts. The front torsion bar size is 18.8mm BTW.

Oh yeah, watch out for oil. I've read on this BBS that it is customary to add some oil to the strut tubes, about 2" was in the bottom of mine. Of course, I assumed the worst at first.
While I could theorize, perhaps someone who actually know something can comment on why this is done. Search this BBS or the 914 one for Torsion bar removal and bushing removal if you are going that far. The guys here have been a real help to me. Dave Dave |

The Boge OEM strut housing is part of the shock casing holding the shock oil. When you remove the "guts", and oil, you replace it wtih a cartrage that now makes up the complete shock assembly. Some advocate putting light oil in the casing to improve the cooling of the shock cartrage by giving a thermal path to the outside housing. Fill to about 2" below the top if you want to - leave some room for the oil to expand.
