I just spent 10 hours dabbing three tubes of 3M seam sealing caulk onto the bottom of my replacement floorpans with my finger to recreate the big globby texture of the factory undercoating or "faux factory undercoating" as I like to call it. The seam joining the two halves of the floorpan has been blended into the texturing to hide it.

Ok, maybe I am crazy. But it sure is going to look great with a thick coat of Wurth high-build underseal clinging to those dabs like big drops. A coat of greenish-gray satin colored enamel between the pinch weld flanges, mixed to match the original PVC undercoating color will be the last step after the car comes back from the painter, to cover any Bahama Yellow overspray.

My neck hurts so I'll forgo any door chopping for the time being!

Did you calibrate your finger using the special VW 6383 tool?

Darryl, you should win the Manhattan Trophy for your efforts. Your tireless commitment to originality serves to restore Karmic balance to a universe in disarray by constant updating/backdating.

Good job!

did you use your index finger or middle finger? I've read conflicting accounts on factory application and finger used. Without definitive data, I'm guessing Hans used his index finger as a rule and perhaps on off days, Dieter came in but used the middle. If you have a 72 Dieter S, it's said to be worth millions!

Man, do I aspire. You have got to be the best there is on Pelican in terms of dedication and quality of (to be) finished product. I am so thankful for your website Darryl!

Wow, no gloves, that is dedication!! I admire your committment to this process!

Can you offer up a close up shot? Just curious, why not use the Wurth type sprayer (the drywall hopper type)? Does this reproduce the finish better?

Doug

im sure if you were drinking beer while doing this, taking a pee must have been an interesting task. let alone getting each beer can loose from your hand when finished drinking it. looks good. kudos for originality and detail. wish santa had brought me a lift!

D, you're a madman!!

But considering the animations that you've done, what you did to the floor pan probably wasn't that bad.

Great job!!

Hey Doug!

First of all, my goal was to preserve as much of the original thick factory PVC undercoating as I could on the car to maintain the patina and original finish. With all the rust repair, there are many areas along the fenderwells that needed to have the patched undercoating blended in with the original above the repair area. That's where I developed the "faux factory undercoating" technique. When I got to the all new floorpans, I thought about trying something less labor intensive but came back to the reality that the "faux factory undercoating" technique would really look the best.

On other restorations, I've used Wurth high-build underseal and Wurth SKS stone guard using a shutz-gun and neither offer the huge splatter pattern found on the original PVC undercoating. The Wurth products looked pretty good right after they were applied but shrunk down to nearly flat once all the solvents had evaporated from the surface weeks later.

Since I'm not going to melt-down my wife's tupperware to recreate the original PVC material, I've experimented with several caulkgun tube type autobody sealants to try and recreate the look but have the bond and durability the modern chemicals will afford. I ended-up using 3M 08300 seam sealant because it has a thicker consistency and doesn't shrink like the other materials I tried.

Here's a close-up showing how the floorpan's original PVC undercoating compares to the fingertip-dabbed 3M seam sealant I just finished doing today, step 1 of the "faux factory undercoating" process:

Once this surfaces cures, I'll spray on a heavy coat of Wurth high-build underseal which will form droplets on the highest "dabs" of 3M seam sealer. You can get an idea of how this will look based on how the fender areas turned out, here's how the Wurth high-build underseal forms on the "dabs":

Here's the before shot of that same upper lockpost area:

I really can't tell where the original stops and the "faux" starts in areas I've patched and for some perverse reason, that makes me happy.

Just for the record, I wasn't drinking beer, it was a triple-shot latte and a box of thin mint Girl Scout Cookies!

It's a miniature model of a 912, with considerably more attention to detail than the original got -- and what's more, the scale is 1:1.
