Follow up to harness question

Does anyone use a 5 point harness with stock non-sport seats? Does it help keep you from sliding around? Thanks!

I was in my instructors car at an auto-cross. He had a submarine belt (5 point) for the driver and passenger in "stock seats" not sport seats. When he hit the brakes, my bottom slid forward (that almost hurt the front area). I was NOT expecting it to stop that fast.

I have aftermarket seats in my car that aren't sport seats. The five point harness does a great job of holding me in place.

I just put in Monaco RS seats with full leg, hip and shoulder bolsters. But it seems to me the harness would hold the driver closer into the seat but I would not expect to have the support with non-sport type seats. Otherwise you would probably find a lot more racers with non-sport seats and 5 or 6 point harnesses.

Jack, it look like you have some pretty good hip bolsters on those seats. Do those provide more support than factory non-sport seats? Just wondering.

Paul -

It's hard to say. They provide pretty good lateral support, but I've never driven anyone else's 911 to compare them to. I was told that that were Recaro seats, but I had them reupholstered when I got the car, and was never able to go looking for a tag to explain what they are, exactly.

I installed my Schroth 5 point belts myself last year. In the directions it gives detailed directions that the antisubmarine belt should not vary by 20 degrees in any direction from vertical in its mounting nor should by positioned over any seat edges. In only makes sense. You are changing the fulcrum of forces by distributing the force over the front edge of your seat. The purpose of sub belts is to keep your side harness's in position and not have them creep up. By having them pull forward, you are, in essence, pulling against the tightness of the belts, creating space in an area where none should be. (See post above from Nick) Unless you can properly mount a sub belt with a 90 degree angle and a pass through, you are better going with a 4 point.
