You must put the trim in before you reinstall the windshield, assuming you have all-ready put the windshield in the car then you should still be able to remove the windshield without damaging the rubber seal.
Then carefully insert the trim into the rubber while the rubber seal is on the windshield. Then install the whole set up into the car. If this is not the case then your trim may be bent, and from researching this topic, that is bad. You could order a later model seal that does not require the trim. or you could shove some thick TV cable wire in there. Good luck

No tool -
Only tool required is some finger strength, patience and clothesline cord to put the window in. Everything gets assembled before it goes into the car of course. Could not tell from your post but if you are trying to put the metal bead in after it is in the car - start over, it will never happen. -Jeff

If the trim itself is bent, I like to use the bare windshield itself to form it. Without the rubber on the glass, the trim should fit the exact contour of the glass. It's pretty easy to bend it to that shape before you insert it into the channel and install everything.

Goint to give it another go tomorrow.Strip is a little out of shape but not too bad,had it hanging on a wall after removal rather than in a heap on a bench.Tried to stuff the strip in while windshield out of car but didn't have much luck so thought we would try it the other way around.Thought it was time to ask for direction when that didn't work out either. At this age I don't need to be pulling out my hair.
Thank you.
