Aplologies for posting, but can I have some tune-up experts read my debacle on OT?
There may be some good that comes of this for owners of DME and other systems in general. I'm not getting the help I know is here. I've been 3 days on the Net on every site and forum I can find. I know the brain trust here can get me out of this.
Please take a look if you know a lot about HEI ignition: Tune up issues on a domestic (I did something stupid). Again, I'm sorry to burden the 911 BBS with this, but after about 30 hours of nothing...well, I need help. |

Milt...sorry I missed this on OT. The Independent shop owner, "wrench guy" who does ALL the work on my Detroit Iron here is a nice guy named Steve. He is a GM and NASCAR fanatic, but he knows his GM stuff. Email me, so I can respond to you..I'll give you his number. (Yes, unlike on the S registry board, you can use my name.

Morning bump. Sorry, but I'm in dire straights. As I said, this type of problem and its solution might be useful in troubleshooting a Motronic system.
A moral to the story: Don't pull wires one by one while the car is running to look for a dead cylinder. OK for the very early 911s, but not OK when there's an ECM like a DME present. |

Pulling wires is still NOT ok on Posche's CDI systems either, only conventional coil/points and I still think this is a bad idea. The 10k+ volts created in the coil secondary windings is going to try to go to ground somehow.
Good luck Milt.

It was the coil after all. Long story and you can read it on OT.
Lessons learned: Don't trust chain auto parts stores to test your electronics. I went to 2 different stores and asked to see a new coil so I could test it. NO good, either one. Decided to go to NAPA and throw my money down ($20) like a red/black bet on the roulette wheel. I won. And it tested as it should have according to the manuals no matter what others said. |
