Ungo mess
Yesterday I was planning to drive my '87 coupe but the battery was dead even though I drove it two weeks ago. No problem, charged the battery but none of the lights went on. I fiddled with the hood light, which went on, and then the car chirped twice and the flashers blinked a couple/three times - evidence of the old Ungo alarm in the car.
After the battery was charged, the car just turned over and would never fire. I presume its the DME relay or the alarm, neither of which have given me any problems over the last 8 years of ownership. After researching the archives, I plan to replace the DME and pull the Ungo fuse. Next I need to yank the alarm. Here's few shots of the alarm's two boxes located in the driver's foot well. What a mess. I'll keep you posted. ![]() ![]() ![]()

the ungo people will be of absolutely no help whatsoever if you do need any help. they assume that anyone with a question about their system is out to steal a car. best of luck getting rid of it. i bought a '78 sc that had one installed in it. a nightmare.

As you can see in the last picture, there appears to be two fuses. I'm going to go pull them now and reconnect the battery.

![]() Take it easy as you take this stuff apart. It doesn't hurt to stop everynow and again and rehook the battery just to see if you haven't removed something vital by mistake.

Good news; I reconnected the battery with the ignition on and the car fired up!
![]() I don't know if the ignition being on had anything to do with it, reconnecting a fully charged battery or just simple luck but I'm happy my car runs again!!

Here's just some of the crap I pulled out of my M3.
This was all just under the driver's side of the dash. ![]()

just remove it all. you'll see where the factory wires have been snipped and run through the ungo. join them back up and you're good to go. i hate those things, and the usual rat's nest of wiring.

Once you get into it, it is pretty easy to find out where they cut into the wiring harness. Mine was right under the dash on the drivers side. There was only one major cut into the harness. I soldered the two wires back together and then removed the rest of the mess that they had in there. No one would ever know it was there...
Good luck.

I had one of those POS Ungo systems in my car that had been installed by a prior owner. It was not too difficult to remove, as people noted above. The splices into the factory wiring harness are fairly obvious, even to me, and I'm certainly no electrical expert. There was a veritable rats nest of non-standard wires under the dash, most of which was from the alarm. But when you separate the wires out and trace the alarm's wires, its attachment points are fairly obvious. I put tape on the various alarm wires when they went through the firewall to help me out in that regard.
The installer placed the alarm's siren in the smuggler's box, so you might want to take a look in there as well. But removing it is not as difficult as it looks. Just trace out the wires to the splices, reconnect them, and pull the alarm pieces and wires out. |

Thanks. That period at the end was to end the sentence. I didn't think it would affect the link. Obviously it does.

Thanks for the link! I've got one of these POS in my SC and I really want it to go away.

That alarm looks just like the old alarm i had to have removed from my car. It was marked "Hofco" and it had 3000 wires attached all over the place,. It caused my intermittent starting problems for 4 years until Tab Tanner found all of the attachments and surgically removed it. Life's much better now!
