Door Pockets ('73) $$$$$$$ !!

I am amazed at the cost of those door map pockets and bungee tightened door pockets (all chrome trimmed) in several vendor catalogs with prices over $500 each!!!! Kinda crazy ain't it? I see them going once in a while in the "parts for sale section" as well as ebay with prices still in the hundreds. Supply and demand running the cost dynamic here? Unreal!

I need to change one or two of these items in my 1973.5T and did recently hear of an aftermarket unit that is identical to the original units. I am not looking for alternative styles.

Does anyone know the source for these?

Appreciate the input.

Bob
73.5T - Sepia of course

Excellent question, Bob. I'm also in the market for at least one new pocket. Does anyone make a fibreglass replacement that I could re-cover with the original vinyl from my warped unit?

Seems like it wouldn't be that hard to do once you had a mold.

Anyone have any leads?

einmalig.com

He makes 'em. I've seen 'em. They are excellent repros. Unfortunately, he hasn't updated his web site in about 6 years, so I'm not sure what they are priced at now, but I think they are at least $300 ea.

I have a small collection of original "builders" in varying states of restoration required. Price will reflect work needed. If interested, send me an email with needs.

I have heard that the factory is going to reproduce the early lower door pockets soon and offer them as OEM replacement parts. No idea of the price they will ask, though.

Thanks Tech.
The EINMALIG website has an inquiry portion and does not list current inventory. I will have to wait and see what they have. They deal in used inventory so maybe they offer "refurbished" rather then "reproduction". I am sure if one was to go to all the P-car salvor sites in the states dozens of those pockets in varying conditions would show up. All my pockets are intact; however a few are missing the chrome trim piece, which by itself could be a small fortune. Nice little profitable venture if one was to get these on the market in fiberglass and vinyl covered for a quarter of the price..............

Hey John, nice site....
They are "temporarily out of stock" on those pockets, which means not many longhoods are coming in as salvage at this place. So, its on to the next salvage yard! As the longhoods get more rare the cost is only going to go up on parts. So far no "reproductions" identified.

I agree, prices are crazy. Mine are in OK shape, one piece of trim missing. I recently straightened the bungee pockets and reglued the vinyl and will live with what I've got.

If you search, there are a few threads about doing this with an iron. I hadn't read them when I did mine and came up with my own method - I used a portable clothing steamer to soften the fibreboard. This worked great, both for straightening warped panels as well as flattening a couple of places that had been broken by some impact. After flattening, I covered with a thin coat of Barge cement to keep the edges down.

I'll keep looking for the missing trim piece at a price I'm willing to pay...

You might try EASY in Berkeley for pockets http://easypor.com/ but I'd call instead of sending email.

All my pockets are in decent shape regarding vinyl and form; however, the chrome trim is missing. Thats looking for an ace in the hole!! Fabricating the chrome trim piece that is channeled over the bungee pocket and inserted in the map pocket would require some work. My best bet is to try and find one with decent chrome and everything is torn up...........that way I might get away cheap and just attach as needed. Most units for sale at lower prices I have seen have some damage to the chrome.

You can try to give DC automotive a call and have them put you on a list to contact you if the part comes in.

I visited their warehouse during a tour and they are constantly getting new parts cars to part out. The owner is focusing on the small little items that are no longer re-produced (Interioe/Exterior body parts) so it may take a few days for the item to be listed in the inventory.

Good luck.

I contacted einmalig.com about a set of all 4 repros a few weeks back and they quoted $1400 for a set of 4. They do also just sell the trim if this is all that is missing from yours both restored OEM an repro which is made of plastic.

I'm also looking for a set for my 72 and they're outrageously priced ($1k for a set). My wife who's German, has a friend at Zuffenhausen and they will be making OEM door pockets soon, if I find out the cost I will let you know.

Einmalig reproduces both the pockets and the door pulls for the 69-73 models- they are not refurbished old parts

How much does it really cost them to manufacturer the repros?

When I spoke to him he had both, repro ones and factory re-manufactured.

Heres his exact reply from his e-mail "have all four door pockets in stock, 69-73 new repo or factory reconditioned, thanks, brian"

Incidently the re-con ones were even more expenisve than the repro new ones. "$1400.00 repro and recon'd $1800.00? all in stock, thanks, brian"
