73.5 ignition/starter issue - could use some help
I went to start my 73.5 today (hot engine) and when the engine did not kick over after a few seconds I turned the key off, but the starter kept turning over. I turned the key back and forth, even removed it, but the starter kept running. The engine never did start, but the batteries drained and the chaos stopped. I've disconnected the batteries and am guessing this is an ignition switch problem. Is that a safe bet? Any tests to run or things to check before I order an ignition switch and start grinding off the break-away bolts?

It's possible the starter pinion gear became stuck in the ring gear and won't let go.
The connection inside the solenoid between the battery and the starter motor happens when the pinion gear reaches this point and usually continues until the solenoid is de-energized (ign. key rotated from start position). If the ign. switch and other items check out okay, remove the starter and inspect the teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear. Sherwood |

There is a color wiring diagram for 1973 on this site (it includes the wiring installed for the 1973.5T) - look under Elec. Diagrams right above the 911 BBS line.
Also, I believe if the failure is in the electrical portion of the ignition/starter switch; this portion can be removed and replaced without removing the mechanical portion of the lock (no need to drill out the rivets?) 911.613.017.00 is the part number of the electrical portion of the switch. |

Thanks, Sherwood and Jim, for the ideas. Before I order a new ignition switch I will pull the old one and check it out. And yes, Jim, accd'g to our host's book, the electrical portion can be replaced without replacing the mechanical portion. Apparently access is a problem so separating the two in place is difficult.

check the starter/solenoid. pull off the small wire ( spade terminal 50 i think) and tape it, put in a good battery and if the starter runs your solenoid is still stuck. if nothing, disconnect battery and reattach wire and battery.
