Hello all.
First time entering a message here, Been reading your forum for a few months now and think that the knowledge here is impressive. I have installed a short shifter in my 84 SC, a simple installation job which took about 2 hours. took the car out for a drive and noticed a difference immediately. i went up through all the gears and topped out at 220 km/h, then i came to the motorway exit and started to change down. the move from 5 to 4 did not go as i expected and there was a loug crunching sound, but not nike what you would hear when crunching gears, i was listenning carefully to all sounds so this was only for about half a second. All other gears worked fine. I tried all gears at home with the engine running and could not get the sam eeffect, went out for a drive and the sound (horrible) was there again. Am i touching reverse??? Are there parts availible to remedy this? Can this be abjusted by moving the linkage between the back seats??? Hope that you can make sense of this. Thanks in advance Des |

Yes certainly worth checking your linkage setup first. I would try loosen the linkage and just push the gearstick forwards a little which will push the two halves of the linkage together a bit more (but don't move gearstick side to side at all) then re-tighten link. Before you start it might be worth marking the linkage position so you can put it back if it doesn't solve your problem.
Once correctly adjusted, the travel distance from neutral up to third and from neutral down to forth should be about the same. Jon |

Yes, you are "nicking" reverse when shifting from 5th to 4th. Can be adjusted with the shift coupler in the tunnel. Also, check the pawl for reverse on the shift tower, it might need some lube. In fact, lube the whole mechanism in the tower. Provided that all bushings (Cup, rod and coupler) are good, adjusting for optimum shifting requires axial (Clamp) and radial (Allen screw) adjustments in VERY, VERY small amounts with the coupler. Make scribe marks on the shaft so you don't move it too much. It's trial and error to get it right: Adjust, drive, adjust.

Sounds like a problem I have experienced, mines not a short shift.
Coming out of 5 sometimes it touchs reverse if I am not very careful, disturbing sound. With mine it is sometimes difficult to go from 4 to 5, you have to pull the stick back a little to get across for 5 shift up. Was you gear shift working ok before the short shift kit?

nolift911 i have a" 911sc 1984 model" 84 SC Naill Gearing was ok as in no noise's before i installed the short shifter. Gunter I have looked at the tower and lubed everything when i installed the short shift ´parts, could the problem be solved by increasing the diameter of the gearshift lever where it enters the tower ? I have been trying different things and noticed that engaging first and second is even easier if the lever is held 2-3 mm from the lefthand side.?? Can I take a WA guess that you have a WM short shifter? You mentioned enlarging the lever OD where it enters the fork, and it so happens the WM lever is 19mm (3/4"). The factory lever is about 20mm thus the looseness you have. That the case?
This may or may not be dependent on the scrunch due to a slightly misadjusted shift coupler. Sherwood |

I have the car up on a lift at the moment and am doing a full service valves,gaskets all fluids etc, have porsches service guide for that.
As soon as all this is done i will be concentrateing on gear shift remedies. The 19/20 mm issue i solved earlier by making a half mm thick sheath and placing over the 19mm lever to bring it up to 20 mm. I will write some more when i have made the adjustments at the shift coupler. Des |
