Question ssi and catalytic converter

Has anyone combined an ssi heat exchanger set up with a catalytic converter that met emission standards? I'm looking to avoid the swapping of exhaust sytems every two years.

You can get and run Cats the fit in the muffler outlets, they do work well but ...

*are not as efficient as oems , particularly on cold starts
*will not pass a visual

I know folks in CA that did this. SSI and dual cats into dual outlets. No muffler. This will pass fine but as Bill states can be problematic with the visual. The tech will look for one cat. ...

If Oregon just has sniffer tests and NOT a visual test, you CAN pass w/o a cat, involves a little tweek of the CIS mix prior to the sniffer test.
I did it for years....just told the tech my SSIs were dual cats.

mikez:

I wanted to clarify that we have been through this discussion before with someone from OR. He posted the OR emissions limits. They are MUCH looser than what we have to pass in California smog II (on a treadmill!). So, I doubt smog w/o cat is possible in CA.

You can always hope the tech doesn't look too close and pass you on the visual. I'd say 90% of the time you'll actually be fine. But I would certainly rather play it safe and have it all the way it came from the factory.

Have known several people here in AZ who run SSI's and the tech look for a cat, see the silver heat exchanger and pass it on visual. 99.9% of the guys working at those places have no idea what they are looking for and the 911 HE is close enough, so if the sniffer passes, they are happy.

Well,,,,WHEN I had a 3.0 in my SC....it passed w/o a cat WITH SSIs.....of course I live in an area of CA that does not have the treadmill test. All I did was lean out the CIS, test, and readjust....

Now with my 3.6 in my SC...whole diff ball game.

Leverpuller: What components did you use to build the muffler cat combination? Do you have a picture? Thanks.

OK, if you have to swap out heat exchangers every two years, has anyone thought of a setup whereby you leave the passenger side SSI in and just swap out the driver side with the original HE and cat? If you modify the original oil lines (see separate thread) it seems possible. Keep the 2 in muffler; you'd be getting half of the exhaust through the cat and perhaps enough to pass emission test, and it would be a lot easier to do the swap.

Not really...most smog techs don't understand the concept of air cooled cars and heat exchangers....they look like big old cats to most of them...
