i Had a fuel leak on the hose next to the fuel pump so i wasn't putting to much gas in so i could fix it without draining to much out.
well i ran out of gas and the car wont run now. it starts and idles but when you step on the accelerator it sputter spits and back fires. no acceleration over 1500 rpms it just sounds like a lot of air sucking sound in the air-box but no revs. i put a new fuel filter on and cleared out the fuel accumulator. all my injectors mist. it just bogs to nothing when you rev the engine. did i blow the air box to crap when i started it back up is that why what the butterfly goes to let air in is dies? |

remove the air filter and see if any of the screws that hold the airbox together are out or half way out, or if the pop-off valve is loose. you can also pull on the airbox to see if it's loose or partially cracked. did it backfire through the intake? usually running out of gas won't damage the fuel pump. cars do it all the time.

What year is your 911 and what engine is in it? Any other engine mods that may make the engine run differently?
I ran out of gas once, filled it up, no problems. I have a 3.2L in mine. This experience did let me know that my low gas warning light bulb was burnt out, which I replaced with a bulb I purchased from our host. -Matt

After you change the filter or break a fuel line, bleed the air from the system by removing the airbox cover and lifting the air flow sensor plate up with the fuel pump running. hold it there several seconds and put the cover back...then start her up.

check all the hose connections....backfires shake the connections loose. Especially since you don't have a pop off valve on it. Sounds like it's sucking air from somewhere.

i did the bleed thing thank you for mentioning it though.
i also pulled each injector off and depressed the plunger while the fuel spilled out of each line. i will say the each line runs on low not the high power i thought it would be. but each injector mists. when i rev it over 1500 its like only 3 cylinders are working. |

If you have a pop-off valve, it may be loose. This has happened to me twice, after big backfires. If you don't have a pop-off valve, check your airbox for cracks.

He said he doesn't have a pop off valve in an earlier post.
When you get this fixed, get a pop off valve. Take off the top of the airbox, remove filter. there may be cracks in the box that are VERY difficult to see. Look closely. See if any lines blew off the box. |

Five LOUD intake explosions without a popoff valve? John Walker's first questions are related to air box examination? I have a guess as to what the problem is.

as it is probably cracked, giving you a massive air leak.

Sounds like too high fuel pressure. Got any gauges?

Some of us think that the big plastic air box on top of your engine has been damaged. It is a two-piece box that is put together with screws. The screws go all the way around. The explosions you heard, if they happened in the intake, they probably caused your air box to separate at a seam. You will need to look very carefully.
The popoff valve is a part that serves to protect your air box from exploding. Exploding air boxes are common, which is why popoff valves are popular. Actually, at this point, if I were looking at a ruined air box, I'd consider alternatives. My '83 has passed emissions for the last time. Next time it will benefit from the 25-year rolling exemption in Washington State. In your situation, I would be very tempted to ditch all the CIS stuff and source a set of Weber or PMO carbs.

favrok01,
sorry to hear your unsolved problem. In related, I have read many do a switch to cut off fuel pump relay for security purpose. Will these create the same problem? Maybe they do. Good luck favrok01.

I was thinking of the carbs and was going to trade a 915 trany for a set but i haven't been able to pick it up from the mechs because of the car problem.
is there a way to check the box and replace without dropping the engine? |
