Perlon sticky and super scratchy

Ordered Perlon carpet kit for frunk of my 88 911. From world upholstery. It has been in place for a couple of months and is still off gassing a really noxious plastic odor. Also the carpet is grossly tacky on the underside and scratchy almost like fiberglass. Is this normal?

Perlon is just a needle felt and shouldn't be either sticky or smelly

Similar materials are used a Van Liners and sold as Veltrim and we buy 30m rolls and have ever seen these issues.

I had the original needle felt in my car, no odor or scratchiness at all.

As an option (and it was one from Porsche) you can consider getting the cut pile carpet like the interior from AppBiz. I am super pleased with this nicer, neater, richer material in my car. Just something to consider.

UPDATE: Can't find the 'black plush' any more on AppBiz or Pelican; found it here - http://www.***************/domestic-trunk-carpet-kits-plush-black-with-black-vinyl-edge-binding-for-911-930-porsche-1986-1889.html

I am going to see what "world upholstery" says - if that doesn't work out I will just make my own using the icky "perlon" as a pattern. I haven't been able to get patterns or templates for any of this or would have sewn my own from the start....

Here is the response from World Upholstery - wow "it is what it is"?? off gassing and feels like fiberglass - YUCK

Hello Marilyn,

It is what it is unfortunately. There's only one source of "perlon". Admittedly it's not as good as perlon back in the 70s and 80s but it's true for everything else nowadays. New manufacturing techniques, cost cutting, etc. There's really not much we can do about it. We'll take it back if you haven't installed it but you really won't find any better "perlon" out there. You're going to have to use a different lining material.

Hello
I received your perlon trunk liner and the fit was perfect. I do have to comment that the material is still off-gassing and makes my eyes water. It is also very scratchy tike fiberglass. This is not how perlon normally is! Is this a different perlon substitute? I can’t handle this item with bare hands without getting scratches. Although your price was excellent, I cannot recommend this product as it is nothing like any perlon I have used before.
Please advise,
Thanks

Wow, talk about terrible customer service!. "Admittedly it's not as good as perlon back in the 70s and 80s but it's true for everything else nowadays. New manufacturing techniques, cost cutting, etc. There's really not much we can do about it." They should put that on their site. I've never used WU but after reading this will not in the future.

I know! Right? They don't even dispute that the product can't be handled with bare hands! If they know that and that it off gasses like poisonous plastic why on earth are they selling it?

Bob at Appbiz here

We have our Perlon custom made thousands of yards at a time. You can not buy it off the shelf. I have no idea where World Upholstery gets what the call Perlon, but they don't buy it from us.
Ours does not have an odor and is as accurate as it gets.

They should rename it Pricklon, the fake Perlon Horrible and I bet they priced it high to boot.

Another couple of thoughts:

Who installed it, and did you see, touch or smell it before installation?

The perlon that I installed (about ten years ago) was quite thin and very easy to oversaturate with glue.
If the installer did so, the issues you are describing could be coming from the glue.

Just received and installed an App Biz RS perlon kit. Installed perfect with none of the attributes you cited.

Did a full perlon interior install from Appbiz. Very pleased with their product with none of the unpleasantness you mentioned above. Pics of the install has appeared in numerous threads as an example of a good looking interior carpet. Great stuff.

It was for the trunk so no glue was used. I received the "perlon" from World Upholstery and immediately placed it in my trunk. I thought the off gassing would go away soon. I "installed" the snaps to fit my trunk which made it non-returnable. I was wearing gloves so did not appreciate the fiberglass cuts until the first time I lifted the carpet with my bare hands.

Take-home message....don't buy from World Upholstery if you want a quality product or customer service.

Another +1 for Appbiz. I have their Perlon kit in my interior and no smell or itchiness whatsoever.
