Am I installing the distributor correctly (pics)

Am I installing the distributor correctly. I set the pulley to TDC and I can't get the rotor to point exactly to the top marking on the rotor body.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1179935749.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1179935764.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1179935776.jpg

Thanks In advance

You have the crank pulley on the BTDC notch. It needs to be set at the left notch "Z1" which is TDC on the 3.2.

John,

What is it that you are showing in the 3rd picture? Is the 3rd picture showing the timing mark set at 5 deg BTDC with the rotor pointing exactly at the scribe mark on the distributor body (not like the 2nd picture)? If so, that is correct - it should be slightly advanced.

Or does the 3rd picture show the engine is not at TDC - that it is at 5 deg BTDC, and the rotor is as shown in the 2nd picture? If so, then you should make your rotor slightly advanced. I'm not sure, but I think the 3.2 engine went back to a clockwise rotation (correct me if I'm wrong!), in which case you want the rotor pointing slightly to the left of the scribe mark in the distributor body. Your 2nd picture shows the rotor pointing slightly to the right of the scribe mark.

hope this helps!

Kurt beat me to it!

I would be interested to hear how others do it, but I center the rotor with the notch on the distributor housing. Is it supposed to be aligned with the edge of the rotor?

johncmng 05-23-2007 08:34 AM

Oh *****, does this mean I set the timing wrong on my cams? Should I reference the TDC to Z1?

johncmng 05-23-2007 08:44 AM

So, in Wayne's book. When he refers to TDC it means Z1 on a 3.2 Carrera? That's the notch on the left of the two notches?

Walter_Middie 05-23-2007 11:25 AM

John,

Yes, Z1 is TDC - see here:

74er,

This rotor placement is just a guess to get the car started. The real ignition timing is done once the engine is running and using a timing light.

Thanks Walter,
Man! I love this forum!!!

Make sure when you put the dizzy in you have the correct TDC in the 720 degree cycle. There is a TDC for number 1 and a TDC for number 4 360 degrees later. You don't want to have the rotor pointing at the groove when the engine is at TDC for number 4.

Walter, the timing is set by the chip on the computer in this car. He has to get the dizzy installed correctly as there is no adjustment on the car.

Andy,

Thanks for the clarification - I learn something new everytime I get on here.

What's a dizzy?
