to bra, or not to bra?

OK, I know this is not technically technical, but I have been up late searching the archives and not found the answer. And, I would post it elsewhere, but it seems to be the most traffic is going on here!

Just a simple question: Use the bra or not? I have one that is coming with the car. I have never used a bra before, but no people who have. I know some people that swear by them... and I know some people that do nothing but swear at them.

It's really your choice. I would suggest checking out the rocks in your area. They may be softer than they are here.

ROCKS!?!?! Dude, around here it's the bugs that hurt!

In all seriousness, we do have lots of bugs here. And they tend to make a mess of the front of my Suburban. But I have also heard horror stories of the bra itself damaging the paint. Just not sure which is the worst of evils.

just take it off at the first hint of rain. to one up this, i added 3m helicopter tape to entire front end and use the bra. my hood where bra goes was toasted from moron P.O. not taking it off during rain. also take off on occasion to remove dust and bugs. blow inside out with compressed air and feel for any crap in there which will scratch paint. someday my hood will be repainted or im going to a carbon fiber hood.

I just had the front of my car repainted because of deer interference....

The current plan is to get some temp. film from Phil's Automotive ($40)and then when paint is fully cured apply Invinca shield kit.

Phil's Automotive, Ltd. 3284 Main Road East Emmaus, Pennsylvania 18049

The invinca-shield people seem very nice and have been doing this for 10+ years...as they explained... for years they used the 3M product and have now switched to some improved product. I don't know what it is....(someone know?) The Invinca-Shield kits are DIY and they send you the special tools and info. you need.

I hear too much about bras scratching paint and trapping moisture. I have to do something...I can't bear to see the rock chips on what now looks like a new car.

Bras have always struck me as sort of like bagging your house to protect the siding.

Cars already have a protective shield. It's called paint.

it may take awhile .... I hope I can get back to that frame of mind...
I agree...the bra thing always looks like your afraid to drive your car...which you may be thinking...but you don't want others to think your thinking that...

Modern paint formulations may be tougher than earlier paint to ward off rocks and gravel. I have older paint thus I use a hood bra for moderate drive distances and a full front end bra on very long drives.

The one time I didn't have my shields up, my hood got hit by a very small meteor (sorry for the lame Star Trek analogy). The bra only looks bad from the outside so it's better one can't see it while driving. A bra is only temporary until it's removed. Pock marks are forever.

2 reasons i will take any kind of protection. PIR is not a clean track. draft behind someone and you will get all sorts of rocks, debris, and little parts that just never seem to want to stay on their rightful cars. kind of like FOD(foreign objects debris) here at the airport. and the amount of FOD picked up around here will astound you. after seeing how much, its a wonder the damn things fly!

with all the construction going on here in arizona, there are dump trucks, belly haulers, tractors w/crap on gannons and buckets that like to fly off and nail you every time they hit a bump! state law states all haulers must tarp their loads.................yeah my A$$! and to add more fun and giggles.........concrete truck drivers that are TOO LAZY to clean their chutes after they pour concrete. OUCH! or the guys in big mongo wooly booger 4wd's that are jacked up 5 feet with no mud flaps!

I THINK A ANTI ROCK FORCE FIELD SHOULD BE DEVELOPED...........MY DEATH RAY SURE WORKS! LOL!

The Invinca-shield kit is what I bought. It came with all the precut pieces, squegee, pin to pop bubbles, instruction video, soapy mixing solution a very complete kit. At the time I purchased they were giving a 10% discount for first time buyers.

The way to go is an adhesive film, not a fabric bra. There are different ones out there. My 993 has an early 3M version. The fabric bras look terrible. Even if they preserve the paint on the front, what good does it do you, if your car looks like sheet while you protect it for the next owner?

George,
Bras are not meant to be permanent attachments to the body; only used for temporary protection when driving. They only look unsightly when installed. If this bothers some people, I suggest they don't use one, but that's a separate issue from its effectiveness. I don't like certain paint colors but I wouldn't suggest they change the color to one that's more aesthetic (to me). With the bra removed, the car looks no different from any other car except it will have fewer scars on the front end.

Question.
Do the plastic films filter out UV rays? If they do, after a length of time (?) the protected and unprotected paint surfaces will be different due to different rates of fading. If no protection against UV, I'd still be surprised if there wasn't a tell-tale sign on the adjacent paint surfaces once the film is removed.

You gotta keep those headlights from sagging, the lift and separation provided is worth the effort required to keep the underside dry and clean.

Doesn't hurt to run a bra when it's raining...but you'd better remove & clean/dry it after the run. A wet bra left on the car burns the paint when sunshine hits the black fabric...kind of like a black water hose becoming a water heater on a sunny day. I put on the colgan one piece before a drive, remove it when I'm back home. It takes only a few minutes to install or remove...

Colgan one piece...bumper & license plate holes delete. I had a local upholstery shop sew in a license plate pocket with a clear front. The pocket closes with both snaps & velcro. Legal display of front plate, no front bumper holes.

No! I used one and now have a line where the paint faded where the bra did not cover. I don't use mine anymore.

Invinca shield is non yellowing and has UV inhibitors and it waxes beautifully!!! I have had it on 3 cars with no issues.

The point on an adhesive film is that you are not planning on taking it off. It remains in place and will look better than a sandblasted front or fabric any day. Some of us drive these cars daily. I can't imagine having to take a bra on and off every day. I know, it must come more natural to other members of the board.

I use a bra for the track. Rock chips suffered at DE's are really nasty, IMO.
