Is that a 901 in a 914, or a 901 from a 914 in a 911? If in a 914 the shift rod is split and has a joint in the center tunnel that can slip. This happened to my 914 years ago. If the 901 is in a 911...I am no help

Actually, it's a 901 from a 914 that's in a '66 Karmann Ghia. The nosecone is custom from a guy in Germany, the linkage is 911 and I custom welded in the 911 shifter to my VW's tunnel. So technically, from the gearshift knob to the nosecone it's 911.
