81SC backdate to a 2.3 ST
Dear all,
My name is Thorsten, I am 38 years old, married, 2 children and from Gemany (near Heidelberg) and I actually want to backdate a 81 SC to my favorit Porsche: a 2.3 ST Last year a bought a cheap SC in a very poor condition, but everything was there an he was without a sunroof. ![]() ![]() I started the backdate by dismanteling the body and I found this ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

And this
![]() ![]() Plus a lot of other rust spots Since January 2012 I changed some metal and fixed several problems. I want to backdate the car completely in metal without any fibreglass, so I bought a set of two rear bumper corners for an Porsche F Model / loonghood. I have also removed the complete holders / brackets (rust!) and fabricated new sheet metals. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

My plan is to use insert nuts to mount the bumpercorners. Ad now (after toooo many words) my question: has anybody some photos from this section from an original loonghood? Have hey also used insert nuts? Have they welded an additional sheet to strengthen te metal?
Thank you in advance! thorsten PS: here are some photos from the flares/ fender extensions ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thorsten,
Great project! Does the page below, taken from the Porsche factory service manual, give you some of the information you need? ![]() und luftgekühlte Grüsse aus den Niederlanden, Otto |

Otto, thank you verry much. The manual helps a little bit, but did not answer the questions in detail. Has anybody more informations and / or some measures from the holes for the bumper corners?

Thorsten,
Could you please be a bit more precise regarding the holes. Could you point them in the picture? Otto |

Thorsten,
Well, I was was more or less right then. Though Dutch, I sometimes prefer German. It might be a stupid question, but if you have the "banana" bumper rear bumper pieces for your back date, fitting is quite simple. When you are going to use the fiber (GFK) rear bumper, I'm not sure if the mounting holes are the same. BTW, these bumper mounting holes are threaded, so you need to weld in a nut at these places. Before I'm going to lift of my oldies, will take a look in the manual if there is some exact info regarding the position of the holes. Otto |

Hi guys, I am doing similar work to you, I struggled with the rear end mounting for a while (check out my thread on what I am doing for more references), in part as v. Zweeden shipped the wrong rear bumpers for my needs. I ended up shortening them as well as modifying for the RS curve, but I finally got frustrated with how to mount the things on my '89 chassis.
Ended up using the original '89 mounts, here are a few pictures, I can get better ones on the weekend.... I basically did not want to cut into the structural tubes that formed the rear of the chassis and in particular, I was not sure how I would weld in the captive nuts that are needed with the early bumper mounting method that you are asking about. ![]() ![]() ![]() Note that these are only being fit on a trial basis and I need to install the mounts for the centre panel yet. Here is the link to my thread... Fitting 6 speed G50 to '89 Carrera Dennis PS - Waar woon je? Ik ben Nederlandse ook, maar ik woon in Canada op dit moment...ik heb een flat in de buurt van den Haag... Last edited by Iciclehead; 09-04-2013 at 06:06 PM.. |

Yes, there is a metal reinforcement located where the two welded blind nuts are located. If I recall correctly, it is slightly thicker than the adjacent sheet metal. Sorry, I don't have any pics |

Sorry, it took some time to find the pictures regarding the rear bumper mount. This is what I found in one of my maps:

Sorry, fogot the following one with the holes marked in red.
![]() It will be hard to find a reference point to measure for the exact location for the holes. Remember that the third mounting point for the "banana" is the hole in the Z-bracket in the fender. It uses the same bolt as used for the support rod between the chassis and the fender. Otto |

I've done a similar thing with my '78 SC.
Don't forget to mount the oil tank to check the fit. With mine I couldn't use the stock bumper bracket on the passenger side. Martijn

Hello everybody,
after more than 5 years, I want to update this thread. What happend in the meanwhile? 3 years ago I decided to engage a qualified body workshop because of a lack of time. He has done several Porsche restaurations before and promissed to complete the project in a few months. Bud: the progress was verry slow, deadlines were moved countless times. Before christmas I decided to cancel the contract and take the car home. Now, here he is...unfinished, poor weldings, por gaps, rust. Last week I made an dolly for the body and now I am welding a new front panel in. To this I have a question: I currently want to weld the F (Dansk) front latch panel into the G. Has anybody some dimensions, that I can check the correct position? As example from the strut domes to the latch, from the domes to the corners, from the windshield area to the latch panel, etc Thank you very much! Thorsten ![]() ![]() |
