My next project...

I recently acquired a rear spoiler to get my 80 Weissach closer to original. The original owner put a turbo tail on instead
It needs a little (actually a lot of) work, but the price was right.
First I need to strip all the paint so I can get a better idea of what fiberglass work needs to be done.

I am not a body guy, but an avid DIY'er. Why pay someone else for something I can certainly learn to do?

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Here are some before shots:

It doesn't look to bad, are there any cracks where the fiberglass is epoxied to the metal? If so then you want to clean the paint up really good around those areas and fill them with epoxy.

I don't think it is necessary to remove all the paint, just use some flexible blocks and 80 grit and smooth it out then go over it with 100-120 and use progressively finer grits to smooth it out. Be real careful flat spots are bad.

The mounting holes for the rubber look a little worn. You could JB weld a thin strip of metal reinforcement around the inner edge of the mounting edge, then drill the holes in the mounting strip, or just use large washers.

Before you get started make sure you mount this on your car without the latch, just to ensure it fits and everthing lines up right.

Good Luck.

It is cracked almost all the way around where the metal and fiberglass meet on the bottom, and there are some bubbles under and gouges down through the gel coat on the top side. All four corners are broken need to be built back up.

I am planning on using an aluminum strip for reinforcement on the lip mounts but I plan on grinding down the existing fiberglass a little and embedding it in the fiberglass repair at the same time filling back in the holes to a normal size.

Mine was cracked in a couple of places (fiberglass separating from metal) I injected epoxy in the cracks and clamped the area overnight.

For the corners consider some marine epoxy, I used it on the edges of fiberglass with great results.

The local body shop supply recommended Dura-glass for the fiberglass repair. I will have to check out the marine epoxy as well.

Brendon,

Were you able to find a factory lip for the tail? I thought it might be a NLA part.
