Thumbs up Cruise Control module easy repair; thanks to this great board

My cruise control hasn't worked since I got the car over three years ago. No big deal since I don't use it. None of my trips have been that long or if they were they required plenty of input from my right foot. But it is one of those things that gnaws away at you to get it "right" with the car and have everything working.

I did the diagnostics test as outlined in the Bentley which pointed to the module as faulty. Then I searched (again) and found a thread which indicated the modules were prone to cold solder joints resulting in intermitent operation. Do you think I can find that thread now...Nope. So just to add to the vault of information this board is known for, here's my "testimony".

I pulled the module and reflowed solder on suspect solder joints. This is all it took and now my cruise control works like a charm. I actually like the way it confidently "takes" the gas pedal from you with some "assertiveness" Although I've read other threads where some people have had the thing accidently engaged, and IIRC some situations where the clutch was depressed and the revs went out of hand (personally I can't see how that can be). Has anyone added a ON/OFF switch to the system? I may go that route. Anyhow, now it works!!

The module is actually quite simple, one sided circuit, mostly discreet components with only a handful of active components. Seemed right that a little touch up with the soledring iron should fix it. Love this baord

Bummer, I took mine out about a month ago. Oh well, I still would never use it.

It's a silver box, approximately 5" X 6" , located just under the radio (at least in my '86 coupe.

On my 79 SC, it's in the trunk, behind the fiberboard cover, in front of the fresh air blower. Same silver box.

I became all too familiar wth the wiring going into either side of that box when I mistakenly cut the cables while doing a radio install; who would put two wires of the same color in the same harness???? drove me ferkin' nuts!!!

Trunk mounted in my 80. Will try your fix and report back. It is nice to say "working cruise control" although it won't get used much if at all.

Also, did you add solder or just do a reheat on the iffy looking connections?

I sucked out the old solder and applied new. The entire board is protected with a type of clear coating that you have to burn through. Better to remove old and apply with new rosin core solder for a clean positive connection.

cruise box for sale

I have one for sale. Came out of a '77. Me thinks they were all the same.

How does $50 sound?

Scott
