My Painted Valvecovers - VHT wrinkle black - pics

Just got done painting my lower turbo valve covers with VHT wrinkle black, (supposed to be good for 350 degrees F) 3-4 coats over the period of 20 minutes, let them rest for 2 hours and then they started to wrinkle up. Put them on the BBQ at 150 for 2 hours, then 225 for 1/2 hour to bake the paint on, it was still slightly soft even after the BBQ.

Hit the raise edges with 100 grit sandpaper on a wooden sanding block to knock down the edges and bring out the pattern. I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out. Going to do the upper covers tomorrow.

Cool. Looks a lot like the finish used on original 426 "hemi" valve covers back in the day.

Harder to clean-- the paint is not smooth.

Exactly, the paint isn't smooth, so the underside of the car engine with the wrinkle paint will hide any dirt and dust BETTER.

I've got an extra set of Turbo Valve Covers that I can do this finish on for you, if someone is interested in buying a set from me.

Harder to see where the oil will come from?

I had the thought of painting most of my engine white, to match the body.
Oil and dirt would be real easy to see...and thus clean.

Painting it wrinkle black gives you more low end torque and higher rpms, I believe the white finish provides better fuel milage as you're parked and cleaning it more than driving it. - grins

"White" = reflective = less heat retained
"Black" = absorbs = more heat retained
To a certain point, you want heat in cylinders and heads. For the rest of the engine (engine case, manifolds, attachments, etc) you want to shed heat.

Let the debate begin!

I think its just paint guys, and both make more power than stock because it is modified.

I love the look! Where did you get the paint?

+1 - The wrinkle finish will hold that oil drip just a few minutes longer before releasing it into the environment, saving thousands of gallons of oil each year. I think this is very eco-friendly and may positively impact gas prices as a result.

""White" = reflective = less heat retained
"Black" = absorbs = more heat retained"
____________________________________

This is incorrect as applied to paint for any temperature cooler than the sun. ALL non-metallic paint will appear BLACK to thermal radiation. It does not matter what color you paint the valve covers or any other engine part, including the headers.

No "debate" - Anyone can verify this by consulting a heat transfer course textbook, such as Kreith or Karlekar & Desmond.

That's why they paint black body radiators white.

Those covers look like my old set-- but mine were actually caked in grime and dried oil....

I think they look sweet.

Will someone who cares, please ask Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton which color valve cover gets better treatment while getting arrested or jail?

Dave -

They look great!

Mine are the exact opposite, powder coated. I like your crinkle coat look. Very durable looking.

Deja Vu - or Vuja De !?

Dave-
Mine are the same, only I had them powder coated that way. Uppers and lowers.

Looks great! I just did a valve adjustment and missed an opportunity. Next time around I'm going for the Kringle black!

you can buy sets of used ones and swap silver/black/red when you do an oil change...
