73 & 74 RSR Flares

Is there any difference between the 73 & 74 RSR front 9" and rear 11" flares?

Thx
Martin

By the way, I'm refering to the profile rather than the necessary interface with the pre/post 73 bumpers?

Thx

1974 RSR had 11/13" flares. The 1974 RS had the 9/11" setup. I don't know if there were differences to the shapes of the lips themselves. But the 1973 RSR (9/11") flares mated with different bumpers, and the fronts had to accommodate the cutouts for the signal lights and horn grilles.

What is wrong with you people, these questions are something a 7 year old would ask. A 1973 rsr flare is steel a 1974 is fiberglass, the 1974 is bigger the 1974 has a air duct in the rear flare etc, etc, etc. Try READING AND LOOKING AT PICTURES in the approx 50 articles and books written on the subject.

The rear fenders appear to be adaptations or the same as the early carrera turbo fenders. The front fenders have a wheel well air exhaust duct on the backside along the seam to where the mate with the doors. If you want a visual search 1974 911 rsr or go to gt-racing.com and look at the 74 rsr body bits.

Hmm, the guy with 12496 posts patiently answers the question and the guy with 25 posts flames the person for asking the question. Welcome to the board, mike, you seem like the kind of person everyone will enjoy having around.

Mike,

Please get your facts right - I'm nearly 8 years old in July.

Otherwise please read my (corrected) second thread - I was talking about the profile (lip shape?) NOT the interface with the bumpers but as Jack so rightly pointed out I should actually be comparing the 73 RSR to the 74RS or IROC? (Excellence Aug 07) and not the 9"/11" RSR (my mistake).

Purpose of my question: I 'may' be able to get my hands on a set of steel 'replica' 74RS flares and if the profile (lip shape) is similiar I may wish to modify these to suit my forthcoming 73 RSR conversion.

Sorry for the confusion but (in my ignorance) I will continue to ask (what may be) silly questions as and when necessary - isn't that the point?

Take care.

Martin

I've pondered this for over the years and my opinion is no, they are not the same. I do have to qualify that a little.

If you look at the early 1974 RS and the IROC series cars, the flares seem to be substantially similar to the 1973 RSR. If you look at the "customer" 74 RS, they are not the same. Porsche evolved the shape of the flares over time. If you look at some of the early prototypes, they experimented with different flare shapes, some of them fairly hideous looking. The final version for the 73 RSR was better but it's still not great. They don't blend into the body well, they are not symmetrical around the wheel (the rear of the opening tends to be lower) and they all look like they have been pounded out on a tree stump. By the time they got to the customer 74 RS, they blended into the body better and were more symmetrical, although not as nicely shaped as what came on the turbos.

Judge for yourself. There are a million books on Porsche, plus lots of stuff on the internet. A great place to start is:

Armando has done us all a great service by organizing thousands of photos of the Porsche race cars into a couple of well done sites. Buy him a beer, or three, if you ever run across him.

Hope this helps,
JR
