901 shift coupler problem

Alright today I relized that one of the bushings in the shift coupler is gone and the other is worn out causing ****y shifts. So what I want to know is.....Am I able to replace the coupler with an aftermarket heavy duty coupler or just replace the bushings?

Just replace the bushings. They are available from our host. Less than $20. You will need a vice to press them in. Search here for shift coupler bushings...

the car is a 69T with a S motor. Is there any aftermarket couplers I can use cause I plan on mostly tracking and autoXing the car and would prefer something stronger if its out there.

I bought the WEVO coupler here on Pelican. It's real nice.. -I'd do it again...

That being said, a lot of people say replacing the bushings is cheap/easy and using the OE one is usually fine.

Possibly a better investment would be to replace the stock shifter with a WEVO or RENNShift unit... That's one of the next things...

I would replace the bushings; next, I'd toss the entire shift tower and put in a 1984-86 one with all new stuff (I think that will work on your '69).

After that, I'd spend $200 on an SRP or Wevo coupler.

A Wevo shifter would be last for me - it ain't cheap.

Randy,

wasn't that you that manufactured your own "gate shift" style shifter out of some "later model" shift tower parts or something ?

There was a thread not too many months ago about this. I meant to bookmark it, but can't find it right now.

I'd agree, his plan of attack makes the most sense...

No - I asked about it - and .. milt? &/or Sherwood responded. I think milt/Zeke - if that is who it was - cut thru the entire tower near the top, cut a ring around it; and then rewelded it in a 180 degree position to move the gates.

I just use mine w/ the existing gates. I'm fine w/ that -- for now anyway.

I deleted the thread a while back but should pop up in a search.

You're right ! that's the one I was talking about ... I thought that was a pretty ingenious idea to come up with...
