930 brake upgrade parts list
I have done a few searches on the 930 brake upgrade but most results seem to be for SC's and other random parts questions. Can anyone give me a PARTS LIST of the required parts and approximate parts costs. Thanks guys!

If this is for your '84, here's what you will need:
- 2 front and 2 rear 930 calipers (78-89 model years will work) - Rear calipers must have new mounting holes machined to work on 911 trailing arms - Caliper mounting hardware, including allen bolts and spacers - Front, 2-piece floating rotors as used on 78-80 930s (hats + rotors) - Rear 1-piece rotors as used on 78-89 930s - 930 hard brake lines are no longer available, so you have to bend your own lines (metric lines available at good auto parts stores) - 930 brake pads - I needed 3mm spacers for all 4 wheels in order to have enough clearance between the calipers and wheels (light machining of the rotor faces was not enough) You may be able to find a kit with all of these parts or you may have to buy it in pieces. A complete kit can range from $2,000-3,000 depending on the quality of the parts. |

Yes, it is for my '84.
Thanks JP911. I am starting to do a lightweight car, 954ish?, for DE and eventually track it. As of now I have all interior removed, less seats, but now I need to start removing all of the carpet adhesive!! I will start a thread later about the progress.

Joe, this is a very timely post for me! I have been reading about 930 brake upgrades until my eyes bleed!
Jon, I have a few more specific questions about the list you posted pertaining to upgrading a 1987 911. 1. My budget is $2000 for a brake upgrade, and the kits I've looked at are in the $3500 range for a 930 upgrade (VCI). Could you throw some links out there for some less expensive, all-inclusive kits? I'm guessing it would be best for my budget if I piece this together. If I go the piece-it-together route... 2. Where would you buy the 930 calipers? A set of 4 go for over $3000 on pelican. 3. Do you know a company/person that would machine the rear calipers? How much would that cost? 4. Who sells the Caliper mounting hardware? I'm sorry if these questions have been answered elsewhere, but I have not been able to find answers. Thanks!

Bill Verburg's page is a great resource for the different brake setups for 911 cars.
http://home.nycap.rr.com/wmv/generalbrmd.htm http://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCity/wmv/brakes.htm As far as the setups go, the best bang for your buck is the 993 setup. I found it to be a bit of overkill for my 87 but they still worked great with a big improvement in heat management. Front: -309x32mm rotors with adapter hats (I used Wilwood HD rotors) -Caliper adapters for adapting 993/S4 front calipers from radial to axial mount (got both the caliper adapters and rotor hats from Dave Walsh/DinFtown at ProBraking) -Bend your own brake lines with pre-flared lengths from local auto parts store Rear: -Factory 78-89 930 rear rotors -993 rear calipers with mounting holes filled and redrilled, interior widened to accept 930 rotor Master Cylinder: -78-89 930 factory Ate 23.81mm master to replace Carrera 20.64 mm master Other issues for Carrera: -Removed pressure-limiting valve from rear circuit -Remove splash shields from behind rotors Pricing: Calipers $750 off ebay (which included like new 993 rotors that I flipped/swapped to a friend for some tires) Rotors $300 for two rears, $160 for two fronts Hardware (caliper adapter blocks w/bolts, rotor hats and fasteners) $350??? Can't remember exactly Brake lines $20 Line bending tools $40- you don't need these, use some sockets Master cylinder $150 Brake pads PF 97 track pads $350 Modification of rear calipers- $200 which included materials and me buying a lame Craftsman drill press. Any competent machine shop can handle this for you NO problem. Total = $2250 approx. You can cheapen that with different pads and cheaper calipers. I paid a good buck for my calipers because they were like new and included rotors. You can easily do this for $1750 if you find good used stuff (rotors, pads, master cylinder, adapter hats and blocks All of the above proved to be a nice brake system with plenty of heat capacity. What I found though was it has more braking power than my car needs and the brakes were a bit touchy on the track, even with R compounds. Expermenting with brake pads could address this issue, but I have a friend (cstreit) who needed more brakes for his race car. So I swapped him for his VCI 944 Turbo brake kit. We'll see how that works in about a week! Do a search here if the 993 brakes interest you. JeremyD, William Miller, Slider79SC, myself and others have done the 993 setup and it's pretty well documented. But don't go thinking you MUST upgrade your brakes. Factory brakes are very capable. Many of the guys I track with get away with the stock brakes on their Carreras and SCs at tracks that are hard on brakes, and they're plenty fast out there.

i just noticed the VCI kits for turbo brakes are much more expensive now. they can't find used turbo calipers so they are using new oem calipers. i think the kit is now $4700. the 993 kits are a muck better deal.

Aren't there any aftermarket 930 calipers?

I don't know of any aftermarket copies. There is an aftermarket Brembo kit that is roughly the same size, but it's front-only and not cheap. The beauty of the 930 setup for our cars is that they fit under 16" (and 15") Fuchs. They are just great for the track, but probably overkill for a street only car.

gestalt1, I noticed that VCI jacked up their pricing on the 930 upgrade kit as well. It literally went from $3500 one day to $4700 the next. It seems like if someone was able to create aftermarket 930 calipers for a reasonable price that would make a lot of people very happy - VCI included.
