HELP SC running fine untill 3.5krevs

My sc is ticking over fine at 5 degrees btdc, it is great up until 3.5k revs at which point it is popping like a match has been dropped in a firework factory. I cant time it properly as I cant get it to rev high enough to do the job. the ignition is a MSD 6a. up until yesterday when it just died then would only start again once i moved the timing anticlockwise ( i had to get it home somehow) it was running fine. If anything it feels a litle warm but has always stayed below the centre (struggles to get out of the bottom box) on the temp guage.

Any suggestions?

cheers

Gordon

I'd start here:

Distributor service (Clean and lube) real easy without removing the pinion gear!
