Both of those look like sweet installs - Ronin, yours is downright famous. I just put my MSD 6A in today. She started up great the first try! I'm not sure this solves my problems yet, as I didn't have time to take her for a nice long drive.

Additionally, through various threads I discovered another possible culprit: I didn't block the heater-hose vent, consequently the left side of my engine may have been getting too hot. I'm not sure whether that aggravated the permatune (it's on that side).

I'll let you know if the combination of these two solves it -

"As for the Bosch blue coil more research would be a good idea. I've heard they do have some differences from the original Bosch coils. I don't know what they are but it would be a good idea to find out compatibility."

The color is the only significant difference!

Just drove around for a half hour or so - no cut-outs! Time will tell for sure.

That's good news.

I took my Permatune out last night and did the bench check. Everything ohmed out good except pins 1 to 4 are open (supposed to be 3,300 ohms).

I called Permatune, but they are closed for vacation.

The only thing I wonder is, since my Permatune has the coil built inside, I have to come up with a coil to work with my MSD 6A. I guess any 12V coil should work? What did you use BrokemyCar?

Did you have to buy a tach adapter also?

Nope, I didn't need the tach adapter, i just plugged the tach outputs from the MSD into the 6-pin connector that used to go to the permatune. I kept the 6-pin in case at some point I decide to swap back to Bosch. Let me know if you need a pointer to some good threads on the topic, some of them have wiring diagrams. I also have my notes during the project that I can share if you'd like too.

Regarding the coil, what I've been able to gather is that one should use either the Blue Bosch coil or an MSD coil. I don't really understand why only these two, but they seem to have picked up Swepco-worthy mythical status. I picked up the MSD Vibration coil (I think "Blaster 2") as I figure its sitting on the fan. I found the cheapest place to buy MSDs is at Amazon.com, but it's only $5 more at Kraagen.

Good luck!

i have a permatune coil only because it was put on new before i bought the car. i think the one to use with the MSD is the blaster2. advance has them for about 35-50$ i think.
my feeling about coil/ CD unit is to use the same brands for best performance and reliability. msd coil and CD- permatune coil and CD unit. although if you mix and match, you may not notice unless you are running very hi compression are maybe on a track car. some swear they can tell the diiference,

Thanks man! I finally got ahold of Permatune and they said there is no repair on the older units, so I am ready to go with the MSD. I think I have an Accel coil in my stash ... It's a standard 12V high performance coil, I would think that would work.

Any threads with diagrams or info would be appreciated. Thanks again... before I found this thread I was thinking it was a fuel problem.
