Question Engine compartment paint - the sequel

A while ago I posted a question ('72, black or body color?) and got various answers (changeover occurred "sometime" in 1972 production, probably painted by apprentice Hans, with brush).

I'm getting ready to paint (I'm pretty sure my car was originally black under there), hoping the engine will be ready soon. What kind of paint should I use? Brushing it on is fine with me and would save some time in masking. Is that a dumb idea? This isn't a concours job, but I might as well be reasonably authentic.

Thanks.
