VIN confusion???
This is probably some no big deal to you old hats, but, I was looking in my trunk today trying to find out if I had an air compressor or not (where is it supposed to be - honestly, I have not looked in my OM yet). Did 83's come with.
Well, as I am looking in the trunk under the carpet, I look in the smuggler's box for the first time ever (fan motor in mine, AC car), right there between the suggler's box and spare is a VIN tag. But it is not the same as the one on my door. The one on my door is a US model vin sticker. The tag in the trunk is a ZZZ VIN. My understanding isthe ZZZ codes are for the euro cars? The whole number is: WPOZZZ91ZDS171372 What's the story here? Will someone unconfuse me?! ![]()

How different are the numbers. For that matter, what is the VIN on the door. They really should match.

So, just out of curiousity, I plugged the number above into one of the VIN decoders. It said it was a 1983 RoW targa... My other one on teh door comes back as 1983 US cabriolet...

ROW or Euro cars use ZZZ
The US models use filler or vehicle specific code like example for an 83 US 911...EA0

OK, the door is WPOEAO91ODS171372.
The last 8 digits match. I guess this is just from the use of a RoW targa chassis to make the US cabriolet model. I just figured they would match as well.

My understanding is that specific components-body panels can have zzz and it means nothing.

This is out of Bruce Anderson's book in the section under 'cracking the codes".
"These three digits are ZZZ for R.o.W. cars and are considered as fill-in digits or specific codes for United States and Canada. Note: On the VIN number stamped above the gas tank on U.S. cars. these three places are also stamped ZZZ."

All the bodies are stamped with ZZZ numbers until the destination is determined. So all US cars have both types of numbers on them.
