Does my SC really have a valet key?
When I purchased my 80 sc a year and a half ago it came with two keys, one that worked everything and one that only worked the ignition and doors and it did not work the glove box or trunk lock.
Well, my wife lost her keys along with the good Porsche key and all I have left is the "valet" key. The glove box is locked with my radio faceplate stuck in it so I am currently radio-less. Questions: Do I really have a valet key or did the last key maker just suck? How do I get in my glove box? How do I get a key to open the glove box? |
The valet key should have a red plastic end. The full-service key has black plastic. Beyond that, I'll let someone else answer the important question about getting into the glove box.
|
They are both black. The lost one had the porsche logo and light built in and the one I have left has a nearly rectangle black top.

Do you have AAA? They will pay/reimburse you for the locksmith for the labor and key.....
|
No AAA....

Lost Key Replacement......
Therotman,
If you need to get a duplicate of the original key, my suggestion is go visit the nearest Porsche dealership and order one. You will need some documentation like registration and ID for them to make or order the key/s for you. If the key tumbler has been altered from original, you might be in trouble. Good luck.... Tony |

The http://forums.pelicanparts.com/images/top_search.gif button is your friend. Use the http://forums.pelicanparts.com/images/top_search.gif terms valet key master. I did and found this:

Glove box & trunk locks
Hope you don't mind a query from England!
When I bought my SC Targa (1980) I got three keys with it. Two are keys with a plastic top and a light (not working of course), the other is a plain metal key. All appear to be the same in that they operate the ignition and both doors. But none of them operate the Glove box lock or the Trunk lock (fortunately, both of these are unlocked!). I would like to be able to lock these, quite important I think in a Targa. Any advice? Thanks David |
Last year, I got tired of the sloppy key action in the ignition, and ordered a new one through the local dealer for my 85 ROW. Using that key as my master, and made a copy.
Dealer mentioned that 85 was about as far back as they go these days. But worth a try. |
Just a side note - if you are in the US, I would seriously consider getting AAA. It's cheap, you can add (additional $$$) long range towing, and it's practically, IMO, a must have for someone with a 32 year old car.
edit - the discounts alone (usually best rate available) easily cover the cost if you travel at all. |
+- on AAA PLUS -100 mile tow -4 times a year - tire change - lock help - I have used mine each year at least one - around a $100 annually - great deal !!

If you need to have keys made, it's a simple thing to pull a door handle off and to also remove the lock from the glovebox. A locksmith (or anybody, really) can remove the lock cylinders and disassemble them. You can then measure the parts and come up with the info you need to cut a key.
If you have a key that doesn't work the glovebox (or front trunk lid lock, on cars so equipped) you have a valet key. If it's not cut on an original valet key blank, then it's a copied key, not an original. JR |
I'm looking at my '80SC keys, valet and master. They both have exactly the same profile ground into the keys! The difference is the slots cut along the key blank from manufacture, and the valet key should be red (even though yours is black). You need to go to a key maker and have him copy your valet key profile onto a master key blank. Just compare your valet key to the blanks, and the master key slots will look quite different. Good luck!

All my three keys look like the Master above .. but none of them lock the bonnet (trunk) or glove box. I think I will have to take the advice of javadog and disassemble the lock, perhaps the lock has just stuck in the open position through lack of use?
Unfortunately, the AAA is not an option! Thank you all for your advice, I will report back. David |
Hi a query from Holland, there is an item in the tech info center about this issue.
Pelican Technical Article: Rekeying Porsche Locks - 911 (1965-89) - 930 Turbo (1975-89) Good Luck! Regards, Patrick |
I have taken the Glove Box lock apart, adjusted the tumbler pins, and the lock now works.
Thank you all for your help. Just one more thing .. I want to do the same to the boot (trunk) lock, does anybody know how to take the lock out of the housing? David |
Seriously guys? . .. no one followed this PERFECT link?
