HOw to tell a 1968 911s????

I have found a 1968 911s and what we would consider a barn
find. With 58k ORIGINAL miles. The body is a bid smacked up, but no significant rust.

It has 15' painted Fuchs.

How can you tell if its a real s????

Of course the badge on the back has the infamous 911S.

Any help would be much appriciated.

Cheers James

James,

What is the VIN and engine number?

Please post some images of the inside and outside. There are 30 or more details that will give an indication. I’ll be glad to help.

Good find.

Best,
Grady

I think the vin/engine number are the only way to really know. Everything else is changeable to a certain degree. I think I'm correct in saying the 68S was never exported to the US due to emissions regulations, although no doubt some slipped throught the net and were imported privately. Here's mine, in the UK, although originally imported to France.

Robbajob nailed it..."Officially", the 911S was NOT imported into the U.S.A. in 1968. The "911L", a U.S.A. model only, was offered as a substitute. This model ran a smog pumped engine of the same horsepower of the base 911, but had the "S" trim look.

The S engine shroud is red. The engine serial number can be found on a vertical metal strap near the fan. The number should be 4080001-4081549 if it's a coupe, 4180001-4180227 if it's a sporto, and 4080001-4081549 if it's a targa.

The other HIGHLY valuable asset are the original sport seats. You'll know those by their deep side bolsters. Those sport seats alone are worth $5,000 for the pair.

Hope you found something great. Keep us posed. Good luck.

Check the VIN in the trunk. The '68 911S coupe range is from 1180001 to 11801267. The '68 911S Targas were 11850001 to 11850442.

And be sure to inspect carefully for what may look like new (painted over) welding marks when looking for VIN plates. Counterfeit early 911S cars have in the past, and probably still do, exist...now that values of good "restorations" have exceeded 6 figures. Caveat emptor. True "barn finds" are rare.

Ok, so you've got the numbers. Note that sport seats weren't standard in the 68S, nice to have!, but not standard.

Here's a link to where an essentially perfect 68S targa exists. Note all the details like aluminum trim under the door tops, the 7300 rpm tach etc.

A fair amount of 68S's found their way stateside. Though it was illegal for a dealer to bring one in, an individual was allowed to import a Euro 68 model 911 (or VW, Mercedes etc), and essentially only have to meet DOT requirements, not EPA. The requirements at the time that were mandated were speedo, seatbelts, and US type headlights. Headrests weren't mandated by DOT in 68 or 69 for import requirements. I did see one car inspected for DOT compliant tires, which they were from what I remember.

I wait in anticipation at the VIN number. Let's hope it's a true barn find. As mentioned, it might be a 68L instead.

The EPA requirements for 1968 motor vehicles are sketchy at best; the agency was not founded until 1970...

I inspect Sites (for environmental issues) and this particular car is a clients. I gave him my card, however he said he wanted the car gone. In other words I didn't get any info other than a very quick look inside (911s badge was under the glove box). I will post shortly when I get a more thorough look and Vin/engine #'s.

With the 911S on the dash, all I'd need to see is the red engine shroud. Then I'd be writing the check.

I would still want to check the VIN- the emblem and the engine shroud can be added. Mind you, any model SWB is a good model.

Well after going back and looking again, it looks like we have a 912 with flared fenders and 911s emblems. Pictures

Are those deep sixes on the front? Defintely a SWB shell, you can tell by the horn grilles.

Don't stop until you get the VIN.
