Alternator Help?
Sent this to Bob at tech support, but thought you fellas could also assist.
The issue is I have a rebuilt alternator that I just received from Pelican, and while the part #’s on it and my old alternator match the main shafts are not the same. On my old alternator there is a brass fitting that extends up the shaft about 1.25”…and on the rebuilt it only extends about 1 cm beyond the face of the alternator so when the fan is on the shaft it rubs the face of the alternator. Does the brass fitting come off? If so it would still not mount the same due to the ring on the new one. How and what do I do? Thank you.

update: I have found that the brass fitting is the piece I need for the new alternator and the one on the old one will move slightly, turns free on the shaft but will not come off. Any ideas/tricks or where to buy the fitting?

Is the "brass fitting" prevented from coming off of the shaft by the woodruff key further out on the shaft? If so, remove the woodruff key. You will probably need both the "brass fitting" and the woodruff key on your new alternator.

I agree w/ Brian. I just changed mine (82), probbaly different than yours, but it sounds like that fitting does what you suspect...keeps the fan assembly away slightly from the alternator housing.
You probably WILL need to remove woodruff key to install on new shaft. Any pictures? Paul

no the fitting is not appear to be held onto the shaft with anything. I can take some pictures tomorrow but all that can be seen is the fitting around the steel shaft where the fan would go.

Have we lost the fact that we're talking a 3.6L engine transplant ( from a 964 or 993) in an earlier car ?

Thanks Wil I should have made that point clear in the beginning. This is in fact the 964/993 Alternator.

anyone have PET? This piece should have a part number, so I am going to the local dealership tomorrow to see if I can get one...if that fails then to a machine shop to have one cut.

Ed it is not...should be between 28 and the alternator. A brass spacer of sorts, just over 1" long and prevents 28 from rubbing the face of the alternator by extending inside 28 and against the bearing.

The only spacer i can find in Pet is part 16 and it,s the same part for both 964 and 993 alternators. Maybe the spacer your looking for is part of the alternator itself ?

Ed from the looks of it 16 is between the fan and the back side of the half V pulley. Thanks for your help, I will figure this out one way or another...Bosch has a location in town so I may take both alternators to them.

Paul the next page is the engine cover no spacers there. I looked at all models from 1989 to 1994 but no spacers other than part 16. The Bosch service in Germany is very good i,m sure they can help Smitty out

just crazy that this part is nowhere to be found, it spins freely on the shaft yet I cannot remove it. Thanks for the help, between Porsche dealer and Bosch I should manage to find the answer.

Fellas I need some help.
Been working with an issue on my alternator, no results so I took both the new alternator and old (bad) one to the dealership for help and walked away totally confused. Confused #1...the two alternators with matching part numbers are not the same. The main shaft on the old one is 17mm and the new one is 17.3 #2...the piece with bearing that inserts into the back of the fan and slides onto the shaft is the same as what they have, and is 17mm inner diameter so it should fit as well. #3...they tell me that my car has been modified (no ****, ya think so) and that I may have parts from a 993 Turbo, RS and C2/4 so they can't figure it out. WTF? Basically the fan when in place on the new alternator it strikes the face of the alternator, the old alternator had this brass shim that prevented this from happening. Issue is I can't and they can't figure out why the old one has this...it's not OEM according to them. Do you guys have connections with an expert who can guide me to resolve this?
