I got it Out,.. 1st. Drop! Questions!

Easy Peasy! For a guy who has never really turned a wrench before,...I'm levitating! Ok,.. but I've got Questions.... please.

First what is she,... she's a 78'SC targa, with about 100k.

1st photo,... my accomplishment.
2nd. photo. What is this? The black oval canister just past the oil filler neck, on the right side of the engine compartment wall. It has a 3-4ft. hose (cotton wrapping) which goes into the black nipple on the Air Box (3rd photo). Is this some kind of air filter?
4th photo. What is this? The backup switch wire and some wire that goes to the starter run thru it. Or is this a connector, does it open up?
5th photo. This is my speedo cable into the tranny. Do I have a manual or electronic?

This board is the best,... wouldn't have even tried this fool hardy task without it. Thanks to all the past contributors!

Looks like a charcoal canister for the evaporative emissions system. Basically, vents the gas tank into the charcoal canister, then the fumes are sucked into the intake and burned. Cuts down on emissions. There should be a thin hose running from the firewall, along with the fuel lines, to this.

Its the main wiring harness from the starter to the alternator. +12V goes through a 4ga wire from the battery to the starter, then from the starter to the alternator. There's a few other wires in there like the start signal to the starter and the reverse light switch. On my Carrera they join the rest of the wiring at the connector on the left side of the engine bay. I imagine an SC is similar.

The black thing in #4 was the filler between the engine tin, you can see the gap in the pic. Looks like the "plug" may have worn down.

Jazzbase,... Is the charcoal canister a pretty much useless eco. add on that the factory did, like the air pump. I know just about everyone has nixed the air pump.
Same for this item? And if you nix it, do you just plug both in and out openings.

Anybody else got one of these things.

Dave, what plug? Is it a plug or a filler? I can see where it would fit in the recess at the fire wall. Is that all it does, or is it a connector box. Do the wires just run straight thru it, and there is nothing inside.

Just a filler plug. Wires go through. Protects them from getting cut up on the engine sheet metal. Since that's one of the main power lines in the car, and the sheet metal is grounded via the engine, protection is pretty important.

It's part of of the fuel tank venting system. Yes, you can remove it, but you need to understand how the whole system works before you do. The end result is you can't have an unvented fuel tank. If you just want to remove the canister, block the vacuum inlet on the air box, and route the small vapor inlet line from the overflow tanks in the front of the car somewhere.

Do a search here for "fuel vapor recovery" or "charcoal canister" and you'll find some good explanations of the system along with some diagrams.
